Diagram
You will hear a talk about changes that have been made to a public park, including new facilities and altered features. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Okay, let me tell you about some of the changes that have been made, and some things that have been retained. If you look at this map, you'll see the familiar outline of the park, with the river forming the northern boundary. and a gate in each of the other three walls. The statue of Diane Gosforth has been moved. It used to be close to the south gate, but it's now immediately to the north of the Lily Pond, almost in the centre of the park, which makes it much more visible. There's a new area of wooden sculptures, which are on the riverbank where the path from the east gate makes a sharp bend. There are two areas that are particularly intended for children. The playground has been enlarged and improved, and that's between the river and the path that leads from the pond to the river. Then there's a new maze, a circular series of paths separated by low hedges. That's near the west gate. You go north from there towards the river and then turn left to reach it. There have been tennis courts in the park for many years and they've been doubled from four to eight. They're still in the southwest corner of the park where there's a right angle bend in the path. Something else I'd like to mention is the new fitness area. This is right next to the Lily Pond on the same side as the West Gate. Now, As you're all gardeners, I'm sure you'll like to hear about the plants that have been chosen for the park.

Question Focus: Location change on the map - moved statue near the Lily Pond

Why this is correct: The answer is statue of Diane Gosforth because the speaker clearly explains its new position. You hear that it is immediately to the north of the Lily Pond, which matches location E on the map near the centre.

Passage Reference: The statue of Diane Gosforth has been moved. It used to be close to the south gate, but it's now immediately to the north of the Lily Pond, almost in the centre of the park, which makes it much more visible.

Common Mistake: Students often choose the place near the south gate because the speaker mentions that first. This is a sequence trap because that was the old location, not the new one.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'now immediately to the north of the Lily Pond' = Map label: 'just above the Lily Pond'

Tips: Always listen for words like used to and now - they signal a change of location.

Key Vocabulary:

  • immediately = very close to
  • visible = easy to see

Question Focus: Specific landmark description - riverbank and path bend

Passage Reference: There's a new area of wooden sculptures, which are on the riverbank where the path from the east gate makes a sharp bend.

Why this is correct: The answer is wooden sculptures because the speaker gives two clear clues. You hear on the riverbank and a sharp bend in the path from the east gate, which matches location C on the diagram.

Common Mistake: Some students choose a general river area without a bend. This is a partial truth trap because the river is correct but the bend in the path is missing.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'where the path ... makes a sharp bend' = Map: 'corner or curved path near river'

Tips: For map questions, combine two clues like water + path shape to be sure.

Key Vocabulary:

  • riverbank = edge of the river
  • sharp bend = sudden turn

Question Focus: Between two features - river and path

Passage Reference: The playground has been enlarged and improved, and that's between the river and the path that leads from the pond to the river.

Why this is correct: The answer is playground because the speaker clearly says it is between the river and the path going from the pond to the river. That exact position matches B on the map.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes confuse this with the maze because both are for children. This is a context shift trap - same theme, different location.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'between the river and the path' = Map: 'space separating river and path'

Tips: When you hear between, immediately look for two reference points on the map.

Key Vocabulary:

  • enlarged = made bigger
  • leads from = goes from

Question Focus: Directional instructions from a gate

Passage Reference: Then there's a new maze, a circular series of paths separated by low hedges. That's near the west gate. You go north from there towards the river and then turn left to reach it.

Why this is correct: The answer is maze because the speaker gives step-by-step directions. Starting near the west gate, you go north and turn left, which matches location A.

Common Mistake: Some students stop listening after hearing 'near the west gate'. This is a distractor trap because the exact position needs the directions too.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'go north ... then turn left' = Map: 'above west gate and slightly east'

Tips: For direction clues, trace the movement with your finger on the map while listening.

Key Vocabulary:

  • maze = confusing paths
  • hedges = low bushes

Question Focus: Corner of the park with path angle

Passage Reference: There have been tennis courts in the park for many years and they've been doubled from four to eight. They're still in the southwest corner of the park where there's a right angle bend in the path.

Why this is correct: The answer is tennis courts because the speaker clearly says they are still in the southwest corner. The right angle bend in the path confirms location G.

Common Mistake: Students may choose a new area because the number changed from four to eight. This is a paraphrase trap - the size changed, not the location.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'southwest corner' = Map: 'bottom left corner'

Tips: Listen carefully to words like still - they mean the location did not change.

Key Vocabulary:

  • doubled = increased to twice
  • right angle = 90 degree corner

Question Focus: Relative position next to a known feature

Passage Reference: Something else I'd like to mention is the new fitness area. This is right next to the Lily Pond on the same side as the West Gate.

Why this is correct: The answer is fitness area because the speaker says it is right next to the Lily Pond and on the same side as the West Gate. That combination matches location D.

Common Mistake: Some students choose the opposite side of the pond. This is a direction trap because they miss 'same side as the West Gate'.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'right next to' = Map: 'directly beside'

Tips: When you hear next to, look for labels that touch or are directly beside each other.

Key Vocabulary:

  • fitness = exercise
  • same side = not opposite

General Tips:

  • Map labeling questions follow the order of the recording - use the last answer to predict where the next one is.
  • Always listen for change signals like used to, now, and still.
  • Combine location clues such as gates, rivers, and path shapes for accuracy.
  • Trace directions on the map while listening to avoid left-right confusion.
