You will hear a talk by the head of a learning centre explaining recent changes to the building and its facilities. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Hello. As some of you know, I'm Elaine Marriott, the head of the college's Learning Resource Centre. We've invited all of you taking evening classes and leisure activities to come and see the changes we've made to the centre in the last month. One major change we've made here on the ground floor is to the layout, as you can see from looking around you. I'm sure you'll recognise the desk. That's still in the same place as it has to be just inside the door. But you'll see that there are now periodicals on the shelves in the corner behind the desk. We've brought them nearer the entrance because so many people like to come in just to read magazines. We now stock a far wider range of periodicals than we used to, so we've decided to separate them from newspapers. This means the newspapers are now just the other side of the stairs, near the study area. Now, another thing is that we've brought the computers downstairs. People used to complain about having to go upstairs to use them, so they're now at the far side of the building on the right, in the corner overlooking the car park. We've now got an extra photocopier, so as well as the one upstairs, there's one down here. You can see it right opposite the entrance, by the wall on the far side. The biggest change, though, and one I'm sure many of you will welcome, is that we now have a cafe at last. We've been asking for one for years. If you turn right, as soon as you get past the desk, you'll see the door ahead of you. It became possible to have a cafe because the building has been extended and we've now got a new office and storeroom area. What else should I tell you about before we walk round? Oh yes, we've had so many requests for books on sport that we've bought a lot more, and they're altogether immediately to the right of the entrance.

Question Focus: Context shift trap - separating newspapers from periodicals

Why this is correct: The answer is the area just the other side of the stairs near the study area. The speaker clearly explains that newspapers were moved away from periodicals and are now placed just the other side of the stairs, which matches this location on the diagram.

Passage Reference: We now stock a far wider range of periodicals than we used to, so we've decided to separate them from newspapers. This means the newspapers are now just the other side of the stairs, near the study area.

Common Mistake: Many students choose the corner behind the desk because the speaker talks about reading material there. This is a Context shift trap because that area is for periodicals, not newspapers.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'the newspapers are now just the other side of the stairs' = Statement: 'Newspapers'

Tips: Listen carefully when the speaker contrasts two similar things like newspapers and magazines.

Key Vocabulary:

  • periodicals = magazines
  • separate = keep apart

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'far side of the building' equals the right-hand corner on the diagram

Passage Reference: Now, another thing is that we've brought the computers downstairs. People used to complain about having to go upstairs to use them, so they're now at the far side of the building on the right, in the corner overlooking the car park.

Why this is correct: The answer is the far side of the building on the right overlooking the car park. You hear the speaker say the computers are now downstairs and clearly gives their position on the right-hand side, which matches this place on the diagram.

Common Mistake: Some students think the computers are near the entrance because they focus on 'downstairs'. This is a Partial truth trap because downstairs is correct, but the exact location is on the far right.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'at the far side of the building on the right' = Statement: 'Computers'

Tips: For diagrams, always follow direction words like right, left, opposite, and corner.

Key Vocabulary:

  • overlooking = facing
  • far side = opposite end

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'right opposite' equals facing the entrance

Passage Reference: We've now got an extra photocopier, so as well as the one upstairs, there's one down here. You can see it right opposite the entrance, by the wall on the far side.

Why this is correct: The answer is right opposite the entrance by the wall. The speaker clearly points out that the new photocopier is downstairs and positioned directly opposite the entrance, which matches this diagram label.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose an upstairs location because they hear 'as well as the one upstairs'. This is a Distractor trap because the speaker then specifies a new one downstairs.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'right opposite the entrance' = Statement: 'Photocopier'

Tips: Ignore old locations and focus on where things are now.

Key Vocabulary:

  • opposite = facing
  • as well as = in addition to

Question Focus: Sequence trap - following movement instructions

Passage Reference: The biggest change, though, and one I'm sure many of you will welcome, is that we now have a cafe at last. We've been asking for one for years. If you turn right, as soon as you get past the desk, you'll see the door ahead of you.

Why this is correct: The answer is through the door past the desk on the right. The speaker gives walking directions, telling you to turn right after the desk and look ahead, which matches this location on the diagram.

Common Mistake: Some students choose the new office area because it is mentioned near the cafe. This is a Context shift trap because the office explains why the cafe is possible, not where it is.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'If you turn right... you'll see the door' = Statement: 'Cafe'

Tips: When the speaker gives directions, imagine you are walking with them.

Key Vocabulary:

  • turn right = go to the right side
  • ahead = in front

Question Focus: Exact match - clear location description

Passage Reference: Oh yes, we've had so many requests for books on sport that we've bought a lot more, and they're altogether immediately to the right of the entrance

Why this is correct: The answer is immediately to the right of the entrance. The speaker clearly states that all the sports books are together and gives a very precise location, which matches this diagram point.

Common Mistake: Students may confuse this with the cafe because both are on the right side. This is a Partial truth trap because both are right, but only the books are immediately at the entrance.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'books on sport... immediately to the right of the entrance' = Statement: 'Sports books'

Tips: Words like immediately and straight away usually signal an exact diagram position.

Key Vocabulary:

  • immediately = straight away
  • altogether = all in one place

General Tips:

  • For matching diagrams, listen carefully for direction words like right, left, opposite, and behind.
  • Visualise the space as the speaker describes it. Imagine you are standing at the entrance.
  • The speaker often mentions old locations first, then gives the new one. Always listen for the change.
  • Questions follow the order of the recording - use each answer to predict where the next one is coming.
