Instructions ›
Label the plan below and tick the right letters accordingly.
Diagram
You will hear a talk given to a group of volunteers explaining locations and tasks in a park using a map. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Okay, Group B, your turn. Does everyone have a copy of the plan? Oh, great. Okay. We'll all be meeting in the car park. That's on the bottom of the plan. See? Now, if you've been assigned to the vegetable beds, to get there, you go out of the car park and go up the footpath until you reach the circle of trees. There they are, in the middle of the plan. And you see that the footpath goes all the way around them. Well, on the left-hand side of that circular footpath, there's a short track which takes you directly to the vegetable beds. You can see a bamboo fence marked just above them. All right? OK, if you're helping out with the beehives, pay attention. Look again at the circle of trees in the middle of the plan and the footpath that goes around them. On the right side of that circle, you can see that the footpath goes off in an easterly direction, heading towards the right-hand side of the plan. And then the path splits into two and you can either go up or down. You want the path that heads down. And at the end of this, you see two areas divided by a bamboo fence. And as we're looking at the plan, the beehives are on the right of the fence, the smaller section, I mean. Now, don't worry, all the bees have been removed. You just need to transport the hives back to the car park. OK, for the seating, look at the circular footpath. At the top of it, there's a path that goes from there and takes you up to the seating area, alongside the bicycle track and with a good view of the island, I suppose. OK, if you're volunteering for the adventure playground area, let's start from the car park again and go up the footpath, but then you want the first left turn. Go up there, and then you see there's a short path that goes off to the right. Go down there, and that's the adventure playground area, above the bamboo fence. That fence does need repairing, I'm afraid. Right, what else? Oh, yes. the sand area. We've got that circular footpath in the middle. Find the track that goes east, towards the right-hand side of the plan, and where that track divides, you need the little path that goes up towards the bicycle track. The sand area is just above the bamboo fence there. And finally, the pond area. So it's on the left-hand side of your plan, towards the top, just above the fruit bushes and to the left of the little path. Okay, as I said already, hopefully we'll be...

Question Focus: Following directions on the map from the car park using landmarks

Why this is correct: The speaker explains the route clearly using the circle of trees as the main landmark. From there, the left-hand side short track leads directly to the vegetable beds, with a bamboo fence just above, which matches this location on the plan.

Passage Reference: Now, if you've been assigned to the vegetable beds, to get there, you go out of the car park and go up the footpath until you reach the circle of trees. There they are, in the middle of the plan. And you see that the footpath goes all the way around them. Well, on the left-hand side of that circular footpath, there's a short track which takes you directly to the vegetable beds. You can see a bamboo fence marked just above them.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose the sand area because it is also near a bamboo fence. This is a Distractor trap because the speaker is very specific about left side versus right side of the circular path.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'short track which takes you directly to the vegetable beds' = Diagram: 'vegetable beds'

Tips: Always fix the main landmark first, here the circle of trees, then listen for left or right.

Key Vocabulary:

  • assigned = given a job
  • directly = straight to

Question Focus: Right side directions and size comparison on the map

Passage Reference: OK, if you're helping out with the beehives, pay attention.

Why this is correct: The speaker says to go right of the circle, then take the path that heads down. At the end, the beehives are on the right of the bamboo fence, in the smaller section, which matches this spot on the plan.

Common Mistake: Some students pick the sand area because it also uses the eastward path. This is a Context shift trap because the sand area goes up, not down.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'beehives are on the right of the fence' = Diagram: 'bee hives'

Tips: Listen carefully for up versus down. This often decides between two nearby areas.

Key Vocabulary:

  • heads down = goes south
  • section = area

Question Focus: Using position at the top of a circular path

Passage Reference: OK, for the seating, look at the circular footpath. At the top of it, there's a path that goes from there and takes you up to the seating area, alongside the bicycle track and with a good view of the island, I suppose.

Why this is correct: The speaker clearly places the seating at the top of the circular footpath. It is reached by a path that goes up and runs alongside the bicycle track, which matches this label.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose the sand area because it is also near the bicycle track. This is a Partial truth trap because only the seating is described as being at the top of the circle.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'takes you up to the seating area' = Diagram: 'seating'

Tips: When you hear phrases like 'at the top', immediately check the top of the diagram.

Key Vocabulary:

  • alongside = next to
  • view = scenery

Question Focus: Sequence of turns from the car park

Passage Reference: OK, if you're volunteering for the adventure playground area, let's start from the car park again and go up the footpath, but then you want the first left turn. Go up there, and then you see there's a short path that goes off to the right. Go down there, and that's the adventure playground area, above the bamboo fence.

Why this is correct: From the car park, the speaker gives a clear sequence: first left, then a short path to the right. That path leads above the bamboo fence, which is exactly where the adventure playground is marked.

Common Mistake: Many students choose the vegetable beds because they also involve a left turn. This is a Sequence trap because the full set of directions is different.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'that's the adventure playground area' = Diagram: 'adventure playground'

Tips: Follow directions step by step. Do not stop listening after the first turn.

Key Vocabulary:

  • volunteering = helping
  • repairing = fixing

Question Focus: Distinguishing between up and down paths after a split

Passage Reference: Oh, yes. the sand area. We've got that circular footpath in the middle. Find the track that goes east, towards the right-hand side of the plan, and where that track divides, you need the little path that goes up towards the bicycle track. The sand area is just above the bamboo fence there.

Why this is correct: The sand area is found by going east, then choosing the path that goes up. The speaker adds that it is just above the bamboo fence, which matches this location on the plan.

Common Mistake: Students often confuse this with the beehives. This is a Direction trap because the beehives require the path that goes down, not up.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'sand area is just above the bamboo fence' = Diagram: 'sand area'

Tips: When a path splits, always note which direction you must choose.

Key Vocabulary:

  • divides = splits
  • little path = small path

Question Focus: Using relative position descriptions

Passage Reference: And finally, the pond area. So it's on the left-hand side of your plan, towards the top, just above the fruit bushes and to the left of the little path.

Why this is correct: The speaker places the pond on the left-hand side, towards the top of the plan. It is above the fruit bushes and left of the little path, which matches this exact spot.

Common Mistake: Some students choose the seating because it is also near the top. This is a Context shift trap because the seating is linked to the circular path, not the left edge.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'pond area' = Diagram: 'pond'

Tips: For final items like this, slow down. Speakers often give several position clues together.

Key Vocabulary:

  • towards = in the direction of
  • area = place

General Tips:

  • Always start by locating the biggest landmarks like the car park and circle of trees.
  • In diagram matching, direction words like left, right, up, and down are critical.
  • Listen for signpost phrases like 'OK, if you're' or 'And finally' to know a new label is coming.
  • Do not rush. One wrong turn in the directions can move you to the wrong area.
  • You hear the recording once only, so keep your eyes moving on the diagram while listening.
