Diagram
You will hear a representative explaining the layout of a reception area to a sponsor at a charity event. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Hello, Mr. Valentino. Thanks for agreeing to be a sponsor of our charity event. Let me tell you about how we will be setting up the reception area and where you can have your company display information. When you get to the hotel, you will follow the signs to the Grand Ballroom. You will walk down some elegant stairs which will take you past this huge mural of the Chinese landscape on your right. The reception area will be to your left. Now we have set up the two organizers tables, one for OBB and one for the EU JMTP on the right in between the doors. On the other side of the room are the three tables for our main sponsors. Since Bayer was the most generous, you get the first table. Then we have a table for Siemens and a table for LanguageLink. We did get a children's choir to sing, by the way, and they'll be at the far side of the room. They'll be accompanied by a piano that is always in that back corner just after the sponsor tables. After the choir has sung, we will direct everyone in through the main doors, which are just to the right of the EU JMTP table. Then we'll enter the dining room and the dinner will begin.

Question Focus: Location description - right side while walking down the stairs

Why this is correct: The answer is the mural position marked G because the speaker clearly describes it as being on your right when you walk down the stairs. On the diagram, letter G shows the mural on the right-hand side of the stairs.

Passage Reference: You will walk down some elegant stairs which will take you past this huge mural of the Chinese landscape on your right.

Common Mistake: Students often choose the reception area instead because it is mentioned soon after. This is a Context shift trap - the speaker switches from describing the mural to describing where the reception area is.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'huge mural ... on your right' = Statement: 'Mural'

Tips: When you hear left or right, immediately check the diagram direction and match it carefully.

Key Vocabulary:

  • mural = large wall painting
  • elegant stairs = decorative stairs

Question Focus: Order of sponsor tables

Passage Reference: On the other side of the room are the three tables for our main sponsors. Since Bayer was the most generous, you get the first table.

Why this is correct: The answer is the Bayer table marked E because the speaker says Bayer was the most generous and gets the first table. On the diagram, E shows the first sponsor table in that row.

Common Mistake: Students often choose the Siemens table because it is mentioned soon after. This is a Sequence trap - the speaker lists Bayer first, then moves on to the others.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'you get the first table' = Statement: 'Bayer Table'

Tips: When several items are listed, listen carefully for order words like first, then, and after that.

Key Vocabulary:

  • generous = gave the most
  • sponsor = company supporting the event

Question Focus: Fixed location at the back corner

Passage Reference: They'll be accompanied by a piano that is always in that back corner just after the sponsor tables.

Why this is correct: The answer is the piano position marked D because the speaker says the choir will be accompanied by a piano in that back corner. Letter D on the diagram shows a back corner just after the sponsor tables.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose the choir area instead. This is a Partial truth trap - the piano is near the choir, but it has its own specific corner location.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'piano ... back corner' = Statement: 'Piano'

Tips: Listen for fixed location phrases like always, back corner, or next to - these are strong clues.

Key Vocabulary:

  • accompanied = played together with
  • corner = angle of the room

Question Focus: Relative position next to a reference point

Passage Reference: After the choir has sung, we will direct everyone in through the main doors, which are just to the right of the EU JMTP table.

Why this is correct: The answer is the main doors marked C because the speaker says the doors are just to the right of the EU JMTP table. On the diagram, C matches that exact position.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose the entrance stairs. This is a Context shift trap - the speaker is now talking about entering the dining room, not arriving at the hotel.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'main doors ... just to the right' = Statement: 'Main doors'

Tips: When a location is explained using another object, find that reference point first on the diagram.

Key Vocabulary:

  • direct = guide
  • enter = go inside

General Tips:

  • For diagram questions, follow the speaker's movement step by step and trace it on the diagram.
  • Listen carefully for left, right, first, and back corner - these words are essential.
  • Questions follow the order of the recording, so use the previous answer to predict what comes next.
  • Do not guess based on nearby words - always match the exact location description you hear.
