You will hear a discussion between two people about a case study on the history and development of a furniture company called Rossi. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Okay, so let's just think about the content of your case study, the history of furniture Rossi. I see here in paragraph 4, You're talking about how Luca Rossi raised the capital for his new business venture. And then you're talking about the customer base growing much wider. But what was it that prompted this growth? Well, that was to do with the quality of the furniture products that the company was selling. People loved that it was all handmade and would last. And because demand from customers kept growing. Well, Then Rossi needed to take on more craftsmen so they could make sure the orders were ready on time. And then he also had to set up two new warehouses to make distribution quicker. Yes, and from there the company really grew. But think what happened next. They started looking at ways to increase their profits and called in a consultant. And what he saw immediately was that the infrastructure was completely outdated. They were paying three full-time admin staff just for data entry. So he recommended they upgrade their software programs and that in turn cut operational costs and just speeded everything up. I'm surprised they didn't get on to that earlier, but I suppose Luca Rossi was more interested in the design aspect rather than the finance side of things. Yes, I imagine that's why he eventually turned the day-to-day running of the company over to his son. And in fact, it was the son, Marco, who persuaded his father to move on from traditional television advertising and go online instead. I guess that's the best way to reach people. It can be, but initially customers actually complained. Why? Well, some users found it hard to navigate their way around the website, so they were getting frustrated and giving up. So then the company called in a professional to improve it. Oh, I see. He must have done a good job. They've had a continuous three-year rise in revenue, so things must be going well. Indeed. And what of the future? Well, I probably need to talk about this a bit more in the concluding paragraphs, don't I? Consumers are already aware of the quality of the furniture, that's for sure. But I think the company is aiming to publicize their values. The fact that they have respect for beauty, durability and functionality, and the environment. A lot of companies are already...

Question Focus: The diagram shows the reason why the customer base grew wider. We need to identify what caused this growth.

Correct Answer: E

Why this is correct: The diagram asks what caused the customer base to grow. The speaker explains that growth happened because of the quality of the furniture, especially that it was handmade and long-lasting.

Passage Reference: But what was it that prompted this growth? Well, that was to do with the quality of the furniture products that the company was selling. People loved that it was all handmade and would last.

Common Mistake: Some students choose designs because design is mentioned later. But here the speaker is talking about why customers increased, not what Luca liked personally. This is a context shift trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'quality of the furniture products' = Diagram: 'reason for customer growth'

Tips: Listen carefully for cause and effect words like 'because' or 'that was to do with'.

Key Vocabulary:

  • quality = how good something is
  • durable = long-lasting

Question Focus: The diagram shows what Rossi added to improve distribution speed.

Correct Answer: B

Passage Reference: And then he also had to set up two new warehouses to make distribution quicker.

Why this is correct: The diagram refers to improving distribution. The speaker says Rossi set up two new warehouses, which means new locations.

Common Mistake: Some students choose website because online selling is mentioned later. But this part is about physical distribution, not online sales. This is a sequence trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'two new warehouses' = Diagram: 'new locations'

Tips: Follow the order of the recording. Do not jump ahead to later ideas.

Key Vocabulary:

  • warehouse = storage building
  • distribution = delivering products

Question Focus: The diagram shows what the consultant recommended upgrading.

Correct Answer: G

Passage Reference: So he recommended they upgrade their software programs and that in turn cut operational costs and just speeded everything up.

Why this is correct: The diagram asks what was upgraded to reduce costs. The speaker clearly says they upgraded software programs, which made work faster and cheaper.

Common Mistake: Some students choose designs because Luca liked design. But the consultant focused on systems and efficiency, not design. This is a wrong focus trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'upgrade their software programs' = Diagram: 'improve systems'

Tips: When a consultant speaks, listen for recommendations and changes.

Key Vocabulary:

  • upgrade = improve to a newer version
  • operational = related to daily work

Question Focus: The diagram shows what caused customer complaints after advertising changes.

Correct Answer: A

Passage Reference: some users found it hard to navigate their way around the website, so they were getting frustrated and giving up.

Why this is correct: The diagram refers to customer complaints. The speaker explains that customers were unhappy with the website because it was difficult to use.

Common Mistake: Some students choose TV advertising campaigns because advertising is mentioned earlier. But complaints happened after moving online. This is a sequence trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'navigate their way around the website' = Diagram: 'problems with website'

Tips: Listen for problems or complaints. They often explain why changes were made.

Key Vocabulary:

  • navigate = move around
  • frustrated = annoyed

Question Focus: The diagram shows what Rossi wants to publicize in the future.

Correct Answer: F

Passage Reference: But I think the company is aiming to publicize their values. The fact that they have respect for beauty, durability and functionality, and the environment.

Why this is correct: The diagram asks about future plans. The speaker says the company wants to promote their values, including beauty, durability and care for the environment.

Common Mistake: Some students choose quality because it is mentioned again. But the speaker says customers already know the quality. The future focus is values. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'publicize their values' = Diagram: 'future focus'

Tips: For future plans, listen for phrases like 'aiming to' or 'in the future'.

Key Vocabulary:

  • values = beliefs and principles
  • publicize = promote

General Tips:

  • Diagram questions follow the order of the recording. Use each answer to predict where the next one will appear.
  • Listen for signpost words like 'because', 'so', and 'then'. They often explain causes and results.
  • Do not choose a word just because you hear it. Check that it fits the diagram sentence.
  • If the speaker corrects themselves or moves on, the later information is usually the answer.
  • Read ahead during pauses so you know what information you are listening for next.
