IELTS Practice Listening: Label Diagram ID: #57453 Easy Lights
Instructions ›
Label the diagram.

Choose four answers from the options.

You will hear a conversation between two people discussing plans for filming a scene in an old mill, including camera positions and lighting. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Here's the mill. You see, basically you have a vertical water wheel, which was used to power the grinding stones. It sounds really interesting. Will we film inside? Yes. That's where the final scene between the girl and the man takes place. Our plan is to fix one camera outside, by the window, next to the door, to film through the window, and then have another hand-held camera inside the mill. That means we can get two views of the same scene. We were going to do something using a mirror, But we decided that would be too complicated. Yes, by doing it that way, all we'll need is lights on the inside, next to the wall behind the wheel, which can shine across to the opposite wall. Will that give enough light? I think so, because the scene is in the evening. It shouldn't be too bright. The actors will be carrying torches too. And we'll have an old screen made of wood just inside the door, because it's a new door and it'll look wrong. The lights won't shine directly on it, so it'll be fine. So you won't actually show the door open. No. There's a huge box on the floor against the wall farthest from the wheel. We'll see the girl approaching the mill on her bike. Then we see through the window and the man is inside looking at it. Then the next shot is the girl in the room with him opening the box. So it'll be a mysterious ending. Yeah. Well, I think it's going to be a great project. Good. Thanks.

Question Focus: The diagram label is near the window and door area. It is asking what equipment is placed outside to film through the window.

Correct Answer: B

Why this is correct: The diagram shows something positioned outside by the window. The speaker says they will fix one camera outside to film through the window, so the answer is fixed camera.

Passage Reference: Our plan is to fix one camera outside, by the window, next to the door, to film through the window

Common Mistake: Some students choose mirror because the speaker mentions it. But they say they decided not to use it. This is a distractor trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'fix one camera outside' = Diagram: 'fixed camera'

Tips: When you hear a plan explained, listen carefully for what they actually decide to use, not ideas they reject.

Key Vocabulary:

  • fix = place securely
  • film = record video

Question Focus: The diagram label is just inside the door. It asks what object is placed there to hide the new door.

Correct Answer: E

Passage Reference: And we'll have an old screen made of wood just inside the door, because it's a new door and it'll look wrong. The lights won't shine directly on it, so it'll be fine.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows something just inside the door. The speaker clearly says they will have an old screen made of wood just inside the door, so the answer is wooden screen.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose lights because lighting is discussed nearby. But the lights are next to the wall behind the wheel, not by the door. This is a context shift trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'old screen made of wood' = Diagram: 'wooden screen'

Tips: Match the object to its exact location in the diagram, not just a word you hear.

Key Vocabulary:

  • screen = divider
  • just inside = immediately inside

Question Focus: The diagram label is on the floor against the wall farthest from the wheel. It asks what object is placed there.

Correct Answer: G

Passage Reference: There's a huge box on the floor against the wall farthest from the wheel.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows an object on the floor by the far wall. The speaker says there is a huge box on the floor against the wall farthest from the wheel, so the answer is large box.

Common Mistake: Some students pick bike because it appears in the story. But the bike is outside when the girl approaches the mill. This is a context shift trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'huge box' = Diagram: 'large box'

Tips: Listen for clear location phrases like 'on the floor' or 'against the wall'. They are strong clues.

Key Vocabulary:

  • huge = very large
  • farthest = most distant

Question Focus: The diagram label is near the wall behind the wheel. It asks what is placed there to light the scene.

Correct Answer: A

Passage Reference: all we'll need is lights on the inside, next to the wall behind the wheel, which can shine across to the opposite wall.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows equipment placed behind the wheel. The speaker explains they will need lights on the inside, next to the wall behind the wheel, so the answer is lights.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose torches because actors carry them. But torches are carried by the actors, not fixed on the wall. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'lights on the inside' = Diagram: 'lights'

Tips: Separate background equipment from items actors carry. They are often different answers.

Key Vocabulary:

  • shine = give light
  • opposite = facing

General Tips:

  • Diagram labels usually follow the order of the recording, so move step by step as you listen.
  • Listen for location words like 'outside', 'inside', 'behind', or 'against the wall'.
  • Be careful with ideas the speaker rejects. These are common distractors.
  • If two options sound related, check who uses it and where it is placed.
  • Use pauses before the audio to study the diagram and predict what kind of word you need.
