You will hear a discussion between two teachers planning a lesson about energy for their pupils. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. I thought I'd introduce the topic by writing the word energy on the board and reinforcing the spelling and the pronunciation. Then I'll do a little mime, you know, run on the spot or something, to convey the sense. I'd keep it brief at this stage. Yes, I will. Then I'll wipe the word off and write the question, Where does energy come from? and see what the pupils come up with. Fine. I'd suggest that you just brainstorm at this stage and don't reject any of their suggestions. Yes, that's what I was going to do. Then I've produced a set of simple statements like, Energy makes cars move along the road, and Energy makes our bodies grow. There are eight altogether. Are you going to give them out as a handout or write them up on the board? First, I'll write them up on the board and then I'll read them out loud. And I'll get the pupils to copy them out in their notebooks. I'll also ask them to think up one more similar statement by themselves and add it to the list. Good idea. After that, I thought I'd vary things a bit by sticking some pictures up of things like the sun and plants and food. and petrol and a running child. And I'll get the pupils to work out what order the pictures should come in, in terms of the energy chain. I think that's a very good idea. You could move the pictures around as the pupils give you directions. Yes, I think they'd enjoy that. And to finish off, I've made a gap-fill exercise to give out. They'll be doing that individually, and while they're writing, I'll walk round and check their work. Good. And have you worked out the timing of all that? It'll probably take you right through to the end of the...

Question Focus: The first box in the diagram shows what the teacher does immediately after writing the word energy on the board.

Correct Answer: D

Why this is correct: The diagram shows the next teaching step after writing the word. You hear the speaker say he will do a little mime like running on the spot to convey the sense, which means showing the meaning physically. So the answer is Demonstrate meaning.

Passage Reference: I thought I'd introduce the topic by writing the word energy on the board and reinforcing the spelling and the pronunciation. Then I'll do a little mime, you know, run on the spot or something, to convey the sense.

Common Mistake: Some students choose Ask questions because questions are mentioned soon after. But that happens later in the lesson, not at this point. This is a sequence trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'do a little mime to convey the sense' = Diagram: 'Demonstrate meaning'

Tips: For flow charts, always listen for time words like first, then, after that to follow the order.

Key Vocabulary:

  • mime = act without speaking
  • convey = show or communicate

Question Focus: This step shows when the teacher introduces written statements about energy.

Correct Answer: F

Passage Reference: Then I've produced a set of simple statements like, Energy makes cars move along the road, and Energy makes our bodies grow. There are eight altogether.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows a stage where information is given to pupils. The speaker says he has produced a set of simple statements, which means he is presenting sentences. So the answer is Present sentences.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose Copy because copying is mentioned soon after. But copying happens after the sentences are presented. This is a sequence trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'produced a set of simple statements' = Diagram: 'Present sentences'

Tips: Do not jump ahead. One diagram box usually matches one clear action in the audio.

Key Vocabulary:

  • produce = make
  • statement = sentence

Question Focus: The diagram shows what pupils do after the sentences are written and read.

Correct Answer: C

Passage Reference: First, I'll write them up on the board and then I'll read them out loud. And I'll get the pupils to copy them out in their notebooks.

Why this is correct: The diagram focuses on the pupils' action here. You hear the speaker say the pupils will copy them out in their notebooks, which directly matches Copy.

Common Mistake: Some choose Ask questions because pupils are thinking actively. But the action described is writing, not asking. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'copy them out in their notebooks' = Diagram: 'Copy'

Tips: If the diagram focuses on pupils, listen carefully for verbs describing what students do.

Key Vocabulary:

  • copy out = write again
  • notebook = exercise book

Question Focus: This box shows what pupils do with pictures later in the lesson.

Correct Answer: A

Passage Reference: After that, I thought I'd vary things a bit by sticking some pictures up of things like the sun and plants and food. and petrol and a running child. And I'll get the pupils to work out what order the pictures should come in, in terms of the energy chain.

Why this is correct: The diagram step is about ordering. The speaker says pupils work out what order the pictures should come in, which means identifying a sequence. So the answer is Identify sequence.

Common Mistake: Many students choose Draw pictures because pictures are mentioned. But the pupils are ordering pictures, not drawing them. This is a distractor trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'what order the pictures should come in' = Diagram: 'Identify sequence'

Tips: Listen for phrases like order, sequence, first or next. They often signal process steps.

Key Vocabulary:

  • order = sequence
  • chain = linked process

Question Focus: The final box shows how the lesson finishes.

Correct Answer: G

Passage Reference: And to finish off, I've made a gap-fill exercise to give out. They'll be doing that individually, and while they're writing, I'll walk round and check their work.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows the final activity. You hear the speaker say he has made a gap-fill exercise to give out, which means handing out a worksheet. So the answer is Distribute worksheet.

Common Mistake: Some students choose Present sentences again because written material is involved. But this is a new activity given to students individually. This is a context shift trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'gap-fill exercise to give out' = Diagram: 'Distribute worksheet'

Tips: The last diagram box often matches phrases like to finish off or finally.

Key Vocabulary:

  • gap-fill = exercise with missing words
  • give out = distribute

General Tips:

  • Diagram questions follow the order of the recording, so use the previous answer to predict the next one.
  • Listen for signpost phrases like then, after that, and to finish off.
  • Do not choose an option just because you hear the same word. Always check the action and meaning.
  • If two options look similar, ask yourself who is doing the action - the teacher or the pupils.
  • Cross out options as you use them so you do not reuse the same word.
