Choose your answers from the options and drag the correct letter.

‘Aquascene' -  1

Smith Street Mall -  2

Cullen Bay Marina -  3

Fannie Bay -  4

Mitchell Street -  5

You will hear a conversation about tourist attractions and places to eat in Darwin. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. So which places would you specially recommend? Well, one of the most popular attractions is called Aquacine. What happens is, every day at high tide, hundreds of fish come in from the sea, all different sorts, including some really big deep sea fish. And some of them will even take food from your hand. It's right in the middle of town at the end of the Esplanade. It's not free. I think you have to pay about $5, but it's definitely something you have to experience. Then, of course, Darwin has a great range of food, being such a cosmopolitan place. And if you don't have lots to spend, the best place to go is to Smith Street Mall, where they have stalls selling stuff to eat. There's all sorts of different things, including Southeast Asian dishes, which I really like. You'd think there'd be plenty of fresh fish in Darwin, as it's on the coast, but in fact, because of the climate, it mostly gets frozen straight away. But you can get fresh fish in the restaurants on Cullen Bay Marina. It's a nice place to go for a special meal and they have some good shops in that area too. What else? Well, there's the Botanic Garden. It's over 100 years old and there's lots to see. An orchid farm, rainforest, a collection of palm trees, a wetlands area. You can easily spend an afternoon there. That's at ***** Bay, a couple of kilometres out to the north. Then if you've got any energy left in the evening, the place to go is Mitchell Street. That's where it all happens as far as clubs and music and things are concerned. You'll bump into lots of my friends there. Talking of friends, why don't I give you some e-mail addresses? I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you...

Question Focus: Identifying the main activity you can do at Aquascene

Why this is correct: The speaker clearly explains that fish come in every day and some of them will even take food from your hand. That tells us the main attraction here is feeding the fish, not just watching them.

Passage Reference: What happens is, every day at high tide, hundreds of fish come in from the sea, all different sorts, including some really big deep sea fish. And some of them will even take food from your hand.

Tips: Listen for verbs like feed, eat, or take. They often tell you what you can actually do at a place.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • a trip to catch fish: This is a paraphrase trap. You are not fishing yourself. You are feeding fish that come to you.
  • shops and seafood restaurants: This is a context shift trap. Shops and restaurants are mentioned later, but about a different place.

Key Vocabulary:

  • attraction = place people visit
  • take food = eat from

Question Focus: Finding what Smith Street Mall is best known for

Passage Reference: if you don't have lots to spend, the best place to go is to Smith Street Mall, where they have stalls selling stuff to eat. There's all sorts of different things, including Southeast Asian dishes, which I really like.

Why this is correct: The speaker says this is the best place to go if you do not have much money and talks about food stalls with dishes from different countries. That matches good cheap international food.

Tips: When the speaker says best place, pay attention. The answer usually follows right after.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • international arts and crafts: This is a distractor trap. The mall is about food stalls, not crafts.
  • a flower market: This is an example-as-main-idea trap. Flowers are never mentioned at all.

Key Vocabulary:

  • stalls = small food stands
  • cosmopolitan = international

Question Focus: Understanding what you can find at Cullen Bay Marina

Passage Reference: But you can get fresh fish in the restaurants on Cullen Bay Marina. It's a nice place to go for a special meal and they have some good shops in that area too.

Why this is correct: The speaker explains that you can get fresh fish in the restaurants there and also mentions good shops. This clearly matches shops and seafood restaurants.

Tips: Notice contrasts like but or in fact. They often introduce the correct information.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • a trip to catch fish: This is a partial truth trap. Fish are mentioned, but you eat them in restaurants. You do not catch them.
  • good cheap international food: This is a context shift trap. Cheap food was about Smith Street Mall, not here.

Key Vocabulary:

  • marina = harbor area
  • fresh = not frozen

Question Focus: Identifying what is special about Fannie Bay

Passage Reference: Well, there's the Botanic Garden. It's over 100 years old and there's lots to see. An orchid farm, rainforest, a collection of palm trees, a wetlands area. You can easily spend an afternoon there.

Why this is correct: The speaker lists many types of plants like orchids, rainforest plants, and palm trees. That clearly shows a wide range of different plants.

Tips: When you hear a long list of examples, think about the overall category they belong to.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • a flower market: This is a paraphrase trap. A botanic garden is not a market where you buy flowers.
  • international arts and crafts: This is a wrong category trap. Nothing about art or crafts is mentioned.

Key Vocabulary:

  • botanic garden = plant garden
  • collection = group

Question Focus: Recognising what Mitchell Street is known for

Passage Reference: Then if you've got any energy left in the evening, the place to go is Mitchell Street. That's where it all happens as far as clubs and music and things are concerned.

Why this is correct: The speaker says this is the place to go in the evening and talks about clubs and music. That clearly describes good nightlife.

Tips: Time words like evening or at night are strong clues for nightlife answers.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • shops and seafood restaurants: This is a context shift trap. That description belongs to Cullen Bay Marina.
  • international arts and crafts: This is a distractor trap. Arts and crafts are never mentioned here.

Key Vocabulary:

  • nightlife = evening entertainment
  • clubs = music and dancing places

General Tips:

  • Questions follow the order of the recording, so use the last answer to predict what comes next.
  • Listen for signpost words like but, then, or in fact. The key answer often comes right after.
  • Focus on what you can find or do at a place, not small extra details.
  • Match the main idea, not just one word you hear.
  • You hear the recording only once, so stay calm and keep moving forward.
