IELTS Practice Listening: Note/Summary Completion Diagram ID: #57385 Medium Paper recycling
Instructions ›
Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
You'll hear a conversation between two students discussing an assignment about the paper production and recycling process. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Hi, Melanie. What did you think of the assignment that we got today? It looks interesting, doesn't it? Yes, Ellen. I've always been interested in recycling, but there's a lot of research to do. Yes, there are a lot of things I'm unsure of, so it's going to be good working with you. OK. Well, why don't we start by making a flowchart from the notes our tutor gave us? Yes. So, on one side we could have the paper production cycle, here on the left. And on the other side, the recycling. Good idea. Let's start at the top with the production. The first step in the process is to get the raw materials. Yes, and they tend to come from pine forests. OK. And then the bark is removed from the outside of the tree, and after that, the wood is chopped up. That's the first three stages. It sounds a bit complicated after that. It says water is added and then the mixture is heated and made into pulp. This will be the thick paste that is used to make paper. Yes, you're right, because after that they use a machine to make the paper and we can put that right in the centre of the flowchart. because it's also where the recycled paper joins the process. Yes. So, once the paper has been produced in the machine, what happens then? Well, I think we should write 'print' as the next step, because this is when newspapers, magazines, etc. are produced. And we could also add that they have to be distributed to stores and people's homes. Right. Then the recycling bit starts. The old paper's collected and then it says it's taken somewhere so that someone or something can sort it. I imagine there are different kinds of paper, or things like paper clips that need to be removed. Yes. Let's have a step after that. Now, how did our tutors say they do this? Oh yes, it involves chemicals. So, how is your chemistry? Well, not very good, I'm afraid. But this is how they remove ink, so this is definitely going to need a bit of research. Right. The last step in the recycling section is similar to the last step in the production process with heating and pulping, before the cycle begins again.

Question Focus: Identifying the source of raw materials in the production process

Correct Answer: pine forests

Why this is correct: At the very start of the flowchart, the diagram shows where the raw materials come from. You hear the speaker say they come from pine forests, which fits exactly into the first box on the production side.

Passage Reference: The first step in the process is to get the raw materials. Yes, and they tend to come from pine forests. OK.

Common Mistake: Some students write trees or wood, which are related but not exact. You must copy the exact words you hear. This is a synonym trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'they tend to come from pine forests' = Diagram: 'raw materials source'

Tips: For the first gap, listen carefully for where the process begins. This is often a location or material.

Key Vocabulary:

  • raw materials = basic natural materials
  • forests = large areas of trees

Question Focus: Identifying the next stage after paper is made

Correct Answer: print

Passage Reference: once the paper has been produced in the machine, what happens then? Well, I think we should write 'print' as the next step, because this is when newspapers, magazines, etc. are produced.

Why this is correct: In the middle of the flowchart, after the machine makes paper, the speaker clearly says they should write 'print' as the next step. This matches the diagram box about what happens to the paper next.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes write produce or distribution, but those are mentioned later or describe a different idea. This is a context shift trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'write print as the next step' = Diagram: 'next stage after paper is made'

Tips: When speakers say "we should write...", that is a strong signal the word is an answer.

Key Vocabulary:

  • print = make text or images on paper

Question Focus: Understanding what happens to collected paper

Correct Answer: sort

Passage Reference: it's taken somewhere so that someone or something can sort it.

Why this is correct: On the recycling side of the diagram, after old paper is collected, the speaker explains it is taken somewhere so it can be sorted. This matches the box showing what is done to the paper.

Common Mistake: Some students write separate or collect, but collecting is the previous step. This is a sequence trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'someone or something can sort it' = Diagram: 'paper processing step'

Tips: Watch the order carefully. Recycling steps come after collection, not before.

Key Vocabulary:

  • sort = put into groups

Question Focus: Identifying the chemical process in recycling

Correct Answer: remove ink

Passage Reference: it involves chemicals. So, how is your chemistry? Well, not very good, I'm afraid. But this is how they remove ink

Why this is correct: The speaker says this stage involves chemicals and explains that this is how they remove ink. That description matches the diagram box showing what the chemicals are used for.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes write chemicals only, but that does not explain the purpose. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'this is how they remove ink' = Diagram: 'chemical process stage'

Tips: If the speaker explains what something is used for, the purpose is often the answer.

Key Vocabulary:

  • ink = coloured liquid for printing
  • remove = take away

Question Focus: Identifying what is added during pulping

Correct Answer: water

Passage Reference: water is added and then the mixture is heated and made into pulp.

Why this is correct: At the bottom of the diagram, where the cycle begins again, the speaker reminds us that water is added before heating and pulping. The diagram box is asking for that added material.

Common Mistake: Some students write heat or pulp, but those are actions or results, not what is added. This is a paraphrase trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'water is added' = Diagram: 'material added in process'

Tips: Listen for passive forms like "is added". They often signal a material or ingredient.

Key Vocabulary:

  • pulp = soft wet paper material

General Tips:

  • Diagram questions still follow the order of the recording. Use the previous answer to predict when the next one is coming.
  • Do not change the word form. Copy the exact word or phrase you hear.
  • Always check the word limit. Even a correct idea is wrong if it has too many words.
  • Listen for planning language like "let's write" or "the next step". These often introduce answers.
  • Remember you hear the recording once only. Stay focused and move on if you miss one.
