Below are descriptions that Police have released for the two men wanted in connection with the robbery at the local jewellery store, Nicholls.

You will hear a local radio news broadcast with headlines and a report on a jewellery store robbery. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Good morning and welcome to 2RC, your local radio news service for the Westerly area. And here are your headlines for this morning. More news from the police into the jewellery robbery that occurred last Tuesday in the centre of town. Comtech, the local computer hardware manufacturer, has announced that it must cut 40 jobs. New routes open up at the Wesley International Airport. Plans for the redevelopment of the Oakley Woods have been shelved. A local cricket team make it to the regional finals and get set for a heatwave. First of all, police have released two descriptions for the two men wanted in connection with the robbery at the local jewellery store, Nicholls, in the centre of town last Tuesday. At 9am, just when the store was opening, two men burst through the door and demanded bags to be filled up with jewellery. Although the two men were armed with baseball bats, the shopkeepers bravely attacked them and beat them off. Although the two men had motorcycle helmets on, these were knocked off during the scuffle, and the shopkeepers were able to get a good look at them. The first man is said to be about six foot in height, slight build, dark hair and a small moustache. He was wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt and a black leather jacket. The second man is much shorter, around five foot eight, with a fat build and red hair and clean shaven. He was wearing a dark blue sweater and black jeans. They are both probably in their early twenties. The police hope to issue photofit pictures later today. The public are urged to call Wesley Police if they think they recognise either of the two men.

Question Focus: Height of the first man

Correct Answer: 6 foot

Why this is correct: When you look at the first man's description on the diagram, the speaker clearly gives his height. You hear about six foot in height, which matches the label asking for height.

Passage Reference: The first man is said to be about six foot in height, slight build, dark hair and a small moustache.

Common Mistake: Some students write six feet tall. That changes the wording and adds an extra word. You must copy the exact words you hear. This is a synonym trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'about six foot in height' = Diagram: 'height'

Tips: Listen carefully for numbers and measurements when police descriptions are given.

Key Vocabulary:

  • height = how tall someone is

Question Focus: Clothing worn by the first man

Correct Answer: black leather jacket

Passage Reference: He was wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt and a black leather jacket.

Why this is correct: The diagram points to the first man's outer clothing. The speaker lists his clothes and finishes with a black leather jacket, which is the correct label.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes write leather jacket only. That misses an important detail. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'a black leather jacket' = Diagram: 'jacket'

Tips: When clothes are listed, listen to the full list before writing your answer.

Key Vocabulary:

  • leather = material from animal skin

Question Focus: Body build of the second man

Correct Answer: fat

Passage Reference: The second man is much shorter, around five foot eight, with a fat build and red hair and clean shaven.

Why this is correct: For the second man, the speaker describes his body type. You hear a fat build, so the key word to write in the diagram is fat.

Common Mistake: Some students write overweight or heavy. These are similar in meaning but not the exact word. This is a synonym trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'a fat build' = Diagram: 'build'

Tips: Do not replace descriptive words with your own synonyms in FIB questions.

Key Vocabulary:

  • build = body shape

Question Focus: Facial hair of the second man

Correct Answer: clean shave

Passage Reference: with a fat build and red hair and clean shaven.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows the second man's face. The speaker says he is clean shaven, meaning no beard or moustache.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes write no beard. That changes the wording and is not what the speaker says. This is a synonym trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'clean shaven' = Diagram: 'facial hair'

Tips: Listen for negative descriptions like no hair or clean shaven. They are easy to miss.

Key Vocabulary:

  • clean shaven = no facial hair

Question Focus: Age of the two men

Correct Answer: early 20s

Passage Reference: They are both probably in their early twenties.

Why this is correct: At the end of the description, the speaker talks about age. You hear that they are in their early twenties, which matches early 20s on the diagram.

Common Mistake: Some students write twenties only. That is too vague and misses the word early. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'early twenties' = Diagram: 'age'

Tips: Age is often given approximately. Listen for words like about, around, or early.

Key Vocabulary:

  • twenties = age from 20 to 29

General Tips:

  • Diagram answers follow the order of the recording, so stay focused and do not jump ahead.
  • Police descriptions often include height, build, clothes, and age. Expect these categories.
  • Always copy the exact word or phrase you hear. Do not replace it with your own words.
  • Check the word limit carefully. Extra words make the answer wrong even if the meaning is correct.
  • Listen for signpost phrases like 'The first man' and 'The second man' to avoid mixing details.
