Complete the diagram below.

You will hear a talk by a tourist information officer explaining a local area and the places visitors can see. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Hello everybody, welcome to the Central Valley Tourist and Information Center. I'm really happy that all of you are interested in exploring this part of the country. I'm going to tell you about the local area and about some of the places you can visit. Feel free to ask me questions at any time. On this map of the area, the Tourist and Information Centre is marked by a black square. The road you came from, the one in front of the centre, is called Sunny Farm Road. This road is where people used to take their wheat and corn to market. It turns north and then forks. The east fork, the one going to the right here, heads towards the lake. We call this Big Fish Lake. It's actually one of the largest lakes in the country. The west fork of the road, going the other way, leads to the mountains. The locals call these the Painted Mountains because they look like someone used different colours to paint them. The mountains have hiking for all skill levels, and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. Excuse me, that island in the middle of the lake, can we go there? Yes, actually, thank you for reminding me. That is Horse Island. named so because it is one of the few places where wild horses are allowed to roam free. You can take a ferry to the island and go camping. The ferry leaves from the southern terminal, on the bottom side of the lake, here on the map. Are there any other questions? Okay, now let me tell you about the first people to settle the area. They arrived over 35,000 years ago.

Question Focus: Synonym match - the diagram label is a place name the speaker introduces after describing the east fork of the road

Correct Answer: big fish lake

Why this is correct: On the diagram, this label sits at the end of the road that goes right. You hear the speaker explain that the east fork goes to a lake and then names it Big Fish Lake.

Passage Reference: The east fork, the one going to the right here, heads towards the lake. We call this Big Fish Lake. It's actually one of the largest lakes in the country.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes write just the lake or fish lake. Those are not the exact place name from the recording. This is a synonym match problem - you must copy the full name you hear.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'heads towards the lake... We call this Big Fish Lake' = Diagram: 'name of the lake on the right side'

Tips: When a speaker says 'We call this...', listen carefully. A name usually follows and is often the answer.

Key Vocabulary:

  • fork = split in the road
  • heads towards = goes in the direction of

Question Focus: Context shift trap - the speaker points to a specific island inside the lake

Correct Answer: horse island

Passage Reference: That is Horse Island. named so because it is one of the few places where wild horses are allowed to roam free.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows a small island in the middle of the lake. The speaker points it out and clearly names it Horse Island.

Common Mistake: Some students write island or horse only. That is incomplete and loses the place name. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'That is Horse Island' = Diagram: 'name of the island in the lake'

Tips: When someone asks a question and the speaker says 'That is...', a clear answer with a name usually follows.

Key Vocabulary:

  • roam free = move around freely
  • ferry = boat for people

Question Focus: Synonym match - the diagram shows the mountain area reached by the west fork

Correct Answer: painted mountains

Passage Reference: The west fork of the road, going the other way, leads to the mountains. The locals call these the Painted Mountains because they look like someone used different colours to paint them.

Why this is correct: On the diagram, this label is on the left where the road goes toward high land. The speaker says the west fork leads to the mountains and names them the Painted Mountains.

Common Mistake: Students may write the mountains because they hear that first. But the speaker later gives the exact name. This is a sequence trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'the locals call these the Painted Mountains' = Diagram: 'name of the mountains on the left'

Tips: Do not write the first general word you hear. Wait for the specific name.

Key Vocabulary:

  • locals = people who live there
  • scenery = natural views

Question Focus: Distractor trap - the speaker explains the road before talking about where it goes

Correct Answer: sunny farm road

Passage Reference: The road you came from, the one in front of the centre, is called Sunny Farm Road.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows the main road in front of the centre. The speaker clearly names this road as Sunny Farm Road.

Common Mistake: Some students write farm road or sunny road because they catch only part of the name. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'the road you came from' = Diagram: 'main road in front of the centre'

Tips: Road names are often said once only. Write exactly what you hear.

Key Vocabulary:

  • market = place to sell goods
  • forks = splits into two

Question Focus: Synonym match - the diagram label shortens the full name the speaker gives

Correct Answer: information centre

Passage Reference: welcome to the Central Valley Tourist and Information Center. I'm really happy that all of you are interested in exploring this part of the country. I'm going to tell you about the local area and about some of the places you can visit. Feel free to ask me questions at any time. On this map of the area, the Tourist and Information Centre is marked by a black square.

Why this is correct: The diagram marks the building with a black square. The speaker introduces this place at the start as the Tourist and Information Center, which matches information centre on the diagram.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes write central valley because they hear it first, but that is the area, not the building. This is a context shift trap.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'Tourist and Information Center' = Diagram: 'information centre'

Tips: Look at symbols on diagrams. A black square often shows a building or starting point.

Key Vocabulary:

  • marked = shown
  • centre = main office

General Tips:

  • Diagram questions follow the order of the recording. Use the first label to predict where the next answer will come.
  • Always write the exact words you hear for place names. Do not shorten them unless the diagram already does.
  • Listen for direction words like left, right, east, west. They help you match the audio to the diagram.
  • If the speaker gives a general word and then a name, the name is usually the answer.
  • Check the word limit carefully. Writing too many words makes the answer wrong even if the meaning is correct.
