Choose the correct option for the following.
You will hear a radio program in which a presenter talks to her colleague about a local charity and its work. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Hi, Fergus. This week, I'm going to talk about forward thinking and their plans for the Colville Center. So, in recent years, people have realized how useful the arts can be within healthcare. The idea behind Forward Thinking is to use the arts to promote well-being. The charity develops projects for people with special needs and health problems, and also delivers training to healthcare professionals in using the arts, as well as supplying them with information and advice. Forward Thinking doesn't just run art and craft classes to distract people who are ill. or recovering from illness, but arranges longer-term projects and courses. As it's been shown that the arts can bring all sorts of positive changes in patients, including benefits such as shortening the length of stay in hospital and reducing the amounts of medicine they need. Forward Thinking has experience of working with a broad range of people from young adults with learning difficulties to older people in homes or daycare centers and people with physical disabilities. The organization's been around since 1986 and it gradually expanded during the 1990s. Then, in the new millennium, it was decided to find a memorable name. So it's been operating as Forward Thinking for several years, in fact since 2005. It's quite a locally based charity, mainly for people in the southern part of this region, which includes all rural and urban communities outside the city of Clifton, which has its own organisation. There are, of course, some similar charities in other parts of the country, in London and so on. And what's the present fundraising in Adolph? Yeah, well, the charity needs funding in order to buy the Colville Centre. This is a former village school, which was built in 1868. It was modernised and refurbished by the present owners last year. So it's ideal for art classes and for small social events, performances, seminars and so on. Forward thinking is fundraising to purchase the building so they can use it to continue running classes and so on for the general public and eventually also for some of the people they help.

Question Focus: Main idea question - asks what the charity does overall

Correct Answer: C

Why this is correct: The answer is It encourages the use of arts projects in healthcare because the speaker clearly explains the main idea of the charity. You hear that Forward Thinking aims to use the arts to promote well-being, especially within healthcare.

Passage Reference: So, in recent years, people have realized how useful the arts can be within healthcare. The idea behind Forward Thinking is to use the arts to promote well-being.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'use the arts to promote well-being' = Option: 'encourages the use of arts projects in healthcare'

Tips: For main idea questions, listen carefully to the first explanation of what the organisation does.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • A: Students may choose this because hospitals are mentioned. However, the speaker never talks about funding art exhibitions. This is a Paraphrase trap.
  • B: This sounds logical, but the speaker does not mention producing materials or making them affordable. This idea is not in the recording at all. This is a Not Given trap.

Key Vocabulary:

  • well-being = feeling healthy and happy
  • healthcare = medical care

Question Focus: Detail question - asks about a specific benefit mentioned

Correct Answer: B

Passage Reference: As it's been shown that the arts can bring all sorts of positive changes in patients, including benefits such as shortening the length of stay in hospital and reducing the amounts of medicine they need.

Why this is correct: The answer is Patients require fewer drugs because the speaker says the arts can reduce the amounts of medicine they need. This is a direct benefit mentioned in the recording.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'reducing the amounts of medicine they need' = Option: 'patients require fewer drugs'

Tips: For detail questions, focus on exact results or effects the speaker lists.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • A: Students may pick this because hospitals are discussed, but the speaker talks about shorter stays, not avoiding hospital completely. This is a Partial truth trap.
  • C: Medical students are never mentioned in this part of the talk. This idea comes from outside knowledge, not the recording. This is a Not Given trap.

Key Vocabulary:

  • reduce = make less
  • medicine = drugs

Question Focus: Detail question - asks for a specific time

Correct Answer: C

Passage Reference: Then, in the new millennium, it was decided to find a memorable name. So it's been operating as Forward Thinking for several years, in fact since 2005.

Why this is correct: The answer is 2005 because the speaker clearly says the organisation has been operating as Forward Thinking since 2005. This is the exact date given.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'since 2005' = Option: '2005'

Tips: Always check what the date refers to. Listen for words like 'then' and 'since'.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • A: Students may choose this because 1986 is mentioned earlier, but that is when the organisation started, not when it got its name. This is a Context shift trap.
  • B: The 1990s are mentioned, but this refers to expansion, not the name change. This is a Sequence trap.

Key Vocabulary:

  • millennium = period around the year 2000
  • operating = working

Question Focus: Detail question - asks about location

Correct Answer: C

Passage Reference: It's quite a locally based charity, mainly for people in the southern part of this region, which includes all rural and urban communities outside the city of Clifton, which has its own organisation.

Why this is correct: The answer is in several towns and villages near Clifton because the speaker explains it operates in rural and urban communities outside the city of Clifton. That means nearby towns and villages, not the city itself.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'rural and urban communities outside the city of Clifton' = Option: 'several towns and villages near Clifton'

Tips: Listen carefully for location words like 'outside', 'near', or 'within'.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • A: Students may pick this because Clifton is mentioned, but the speaker says outside the city. This is a Negation trap.
  • B: London is mentioned only as an example of other charities, not where this one operates. This is a Context shift trap.

Key Vocabulary:

  • locally based = working in a small area
  • rural = countryside

Question Focus: Detail question - asks what the Colville Centre is like

Correct Answer: B

Passage Reference: This is a former village school, which was built in 1868. It was modernised and refurbished by the present owners last year. So it's ideal for art classes and for small social events, performances, seminars and so on.

Why this is correct: The answer is a venue for a range of different activities because the speaker lists many uses, including art classes, social events, performances and seminars. This clearly shows it is used for many activities.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'art classes and small social events, performances, seminars' = Option: 'a range of different activities'

Tips: When a speaker lists examples, the correct option often summarises them.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • A: Students may choose this because it was once a school, but it is not a school now and not only for people with health problems. This is a Context shift trap.
  • C: The speaker says it was modernised and refurbished last year, so it does not need repainting. This is a Negation trap.

Key Vocabulary:

  • venue = place for events
  • refurbished = improved and repaired

General Tips:

  • MCQ questions follow the order of the recording, so use the previous answer to predict when the next one is coming.
  • Listen for signpost words like 'but', 'then', and 'in fact' because they often introduce the correct answer.
  • Do not choose options just because they sound logical in real life. Choose what you actually hear.
  • Pay close attention to dates, places, and changes in time or topic.
  • The speaker may mention a wrong idea first and then correct it, so always keep listening.
