Instructions ›
Choose the correct option for the following.
You will hear a speaker from the Brisbane Festival talking to some international visitors in Brisbane, Australia. Good evening. I've been asked to tell you all about the Brisbane Festival which is being held here in Brisbane from September the 8th to October the 6th. You are all, of course, welcome to come along to the various activities that we have planned while you're visiting our city. We're happy to announce that we have some free tickets, which I'll hand out later. The Brisbane Festival is held every year in a number of venues around Brisbane, not only to show off our own local talent, but also to celebrate the incredible talent that we have in the Australian and the Southeast Asian region. It's a great time for us to catch up with our interstate and international friends, and we're thrilled that this year we have a record number of performances from Southeast Asian participants. We have seen an increased amount of interest from European and American artists in recent years, and we welcome them as well. Our goal is to bring people together through art by making art accessible to everyone. The Brisbane Festival aims to promote cultural understanding and interaction. Right, well, as you experienced today, we have a wonderful climate here in Brisbane. Our average temperature is about 24 degrees Celsius, and we have something like 290 sunny days a year. Naturally, we want to take advantage of this, so we've scheduled performances in public places such as Southbank Parklands and the City Gardens, as well as the more traditional indoor venues, the Performing Arts Centre, Brisbane Convention Centre, the Brisbane Powerhouse and some of our university campuses. I'll hand out a copy of the program shortly, but I'd like to tell you about some of the highlights of the program and encourage you to enjoy as many of them as possible.

Question Focus: Main idea question - asks what the speaker's overall purpose is

Correct Answer: C

Why this is correct: The answer is provide information regarding the Festival because the speaker clearly says they were asked to tell you all about the Brisbane Festival and then explains dates, aims, performers, venues, and highlights. This shows the main purpose is giving information, not just greeting people or handing out tickets.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'tell you all about the Brisbane Festival' = Option: 'provide information regarding the Festival'

Tips: For main idea questions, listen to what the speaker says at the start and what they spend most time talking about.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • A: Students may choose welcome visitors to Brisbane because the speaker says "Good evening" and sounds friendly. However, this is only a greeting, not the main purpose. This is a partial truth trap.
  • B: Students may pick give away some tickets because the speaker mentions free tickets. However, this is a small detail and not the main aim of the talk. This is a distractor trap.

Key Vocabulary:

  • highlights = most important parts
  • aim = goal or purpose

Question Focus: Detail question - asks where the performers come from

Correct Answer: C

Passage Reference: not only to show off our own local talent, but also to celebrate the incredible talent that we have in the Australian and the Southeast Asian region. It's a great time for us to catch up with our interstate and international friends, and we're thrilled that this year we have a record number of performances from Southeast Asian participants. We have seen an increased amount of interest from European and American artists in recent years, and we welcome them as well.

Why this is correct: The answer is Australian and international destinations because the speaker mentions local talent, Australian and Southeast Asian performers, and also European and American artists. Together, this clearly means Australian and international performers.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'Australian and the Southeast Asian region ... European and American artists' = Option: 'Australian and international destinations'

Tips: When listing countries or regions, listen carefully for anything extra added later in the sentence.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • A: Students may choose local and international destinations because the speaker says local and mentions other countries. However, the festival also clearly includes performers from Australia more broadly, not only local Brisbane artists. This is a partial truth trap.
  • B: Students may pick Australian, Asian and European destinations because those regions are mentioned. However, the speaker also mentions American artists, which this option leaves out. This is a partial truth trap.

Key Vocabulary:

  • local = from this area
  • region = part of the world

Question Focus: Detail question - asks where activities and performances will be held

Correct Answer: A

Passage Reference: Naturally, we want to take advantage of this, so we've scheduled performances in public places such as Southbank Parklands and the City Gardens, as well as the more traditional indoor venues, the Performing Arts Centre, Brisbane Convention Centre, the Brisbane Powerhouse and some of our university campuses.

Why this is correct: The answer is at indoor and outdoor venues because the speaker talks about public places like parks and gardens, and also traditional indoor venues such as theatres and convention centres.

Paraphrasing: Transcript: 'public places ... as well as the more traditional indoor venues' = Option: 'indoor and outdoor venues'

Tips: If you hear "as well as", expect more than one type of answer, not just the first thing mentioned.

Why the other options are wrong:

  • B: Students may choose over 290 days because the speaker mentions 290 sunny days a year. However, this number is about the climate, not the festival schedule. This is a context shift trap.
  • C: Students may pick traditional performance centres around the city because several indoor venues are listed. However, the speaker also clearly mentions outdoor public places, so this option is incomplete. This is a partial truth trap.

Key Vocabulary:

  • venue = place for events
  • scheduled = planned

General Tips:

  • MCQ questions follow the order of the recording, so use the previous answer to know when the next one is coming.
  • For main idea questions, focus on the speaker's purpose, not small details.
  • Be careful with numbers like dates or statistics - check what they actually refer to.
