Practice Listening: Fill in the Blanks (Type In) ID: #30244 Medium Children's Language
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. Type the missing words in each blank.
* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
We'll  look  now  at  a  very  interesting  .  It  was  carried  out  by  a  researcher  who  works  in  two  countries.  Scotland  and  Italy,  and  it  involved  children  from  both  of  these  countries  aged  around    or  so.  Half  of  the  children  from  each  country  spoke  only  their  national  language.  However,  the  other  half  spoke  their  national  language  plus  another  language.
During  the  study  all  the  participants  were  given  tests  and  quizzes  which  looked  at  a  range  of  skills,  including    understanding,  problem-solving,  creative  thinking  and  .  The  children  used  their  national  language  to  complete  the  tasks,  which  involved  things  like  copying    of  coloured  blocks,  orally  repeating  a  series  of  numbers  and  giving  clear  definitions  of  words.
The  results  were  quite  clear.  The  bilingual  children  were    more  successful  in  the  tasks.

Correct answer: study

Explanation: Here you hear "a very interesting study". You need a simple word for a research project.

Meaning: "study" means a research project or investigation.

Wrong options:

  • stuyd: Two letters are in the wrong order. Check the letters: "study". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
Correct answer: nine

Explanation: The speaker says "aged around nine or so". Write the number word nine as heard.

Meaning: "nine" means about 9 years old.

Wrong options:

  • nin: It leaves out the "e". The right spelling is "nine". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
Correct answer: vocabulary

Explanation: You hear "including vocabulary understanding, problem-solving". You need the word for a set of known words.

Meaning: "vocabulary" means the set of words a person knows.

Wrong options:

  • vocabluary: Two letters are in the wrong order. Write "vocabulary". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
Correct answer: arithmetic

Explanation: Listen for "creative thinking and arithmetic". Put the school subject word for number work.

Meaning: "arithmetic" means basic number work and simple calculations.

Wrong options:

  • arithmatic: It has "a" where the word has "e". Write "arithmetic". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
Correct answer: patterns

Explanation: On the recording you hear "copying patterns of coloured blocks". The task mentions more than one, so add s.

Meaning: "patterns" means repeated shapes or designs to copy.

Wrong options:

  • patterens: It adds an extra "e". The right spelling is "patterns". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • pattern: "pattern" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "patterns", so write the "s".
Correct answer: significantly

Explanation: Listen again to "were significantly more successful". You need a word that tells how much, so it ends in ly.

Meaning: "significantly" means by a large or important amount.

Wrong options:

  • significant: "significant" is missing the ending. The speaker says "significantly", with "ly" at the end.
