Practice Listening: Fill in the Blanks (Type In) ID: #30256 Short Academic Writing
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. Type the missing words in each blank.
* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
To  be  honest,  the  biggest  problem  for  most  undergraduate  students,  in  terms  of  academic  writing,  is  not  only  adapting  to  a  far  more    and  formal  style,  but  also  learning  how  to  ascertain  the  difference  between  important,    information  and  unnecessary,  or  even  irrelevant  .  In  my  experience,  I  would  say  it  takes  students  their  first  year,  if  not  longer,  to    what  is  required  and  to  start  to  implement  those  requirements  in  their  writing.  What  they  really  should  be  doing,  if  they  are  struggling  with  written  ,  is  to  seek  help  from  the    support  services  which  are  available  at  the  University.

Correct answer: structured

Explanation: Here you hear "a far more structured and formal". You need a describing word for style.

Meaning: "structured" means put in an organised way.

Wrong options:

  • structred: It leaves out the "u". Check the letters: "structured". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • structure: "structure" is missing the ending. The speaker says "structured", with "d" at the end.
Correct answer: valid

Explanation: The speaker says "important, valid information". You need a short describing word after important.

Meaning: "valid" means correct and acceptable.

Wrong options:

  • vald: It leaves out the "i". Write "valid". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • valuable: This word means useful or worth a lot, not exactly correct or acceptable here.
Correct answer: material

Explanation: You hear "unnecessary, or even irrelevant material". After irrelevant you need the word for a thing.

Meaning: "material" means written or printed content used in study.

Wrong options:

  • materiel: It has "e" where the word has "a". Check the letters: "material". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • materials: "materials" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "material", with no "s".
Correct answer: appreciate

Explanation: Listen for "to appreciate what is required". You need an action word after to.

Meaning: "appreciate" means to understand the value or need of something.

Wrong options:

  • appretiate: It has "t" where the word has "c". Write "appreciate". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • appreciated: "appreciated" has an extra "d" at the end. The speaker says "appreciate".
Correct answer: assignments

Explanation: On the recording you hear "written assignments, is to seek". After written you need more than one thing, so add s.

Meaning: "assignments" means tasks or pieces of work given to students.

Wrong options:

  • assigments: It leaves out the "n". Write "assignments". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • assignment: "assignment" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "assignments", so write the "s".
Correct answer: excellent

Explanation: Listen again to "the excellent support services". You need a short describing word before support services.

Meaning: "excellent" means very good or high quality.

Wrong options:

  • exellent: It leaves out the "c". The right spelling is "excellent". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • excellently: "excellently" has an extra "ly" at the end. The speaker says "excellent".
