Correct answer: industrial

Explanation: The speaker says "life in the industrial districts". It comes before "districts", so you need a word for the type of place, ends in al.

Meaning: "industrial" means about factories and industry.

Wrong options:

  • industral: It leaves out the "i". The right spelling is "industrial". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • industial: It leaves out the "r". The right spelling is "industrial". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
Correct answer: distinctive

Explanation: You hear "developed a distinctive style". You need a describing word that shows a clear, special style, ends in ive.

Meaning: "distinctive" means having a clear, special style.

Wrong options:

  • distincitve: Two letters are in the wrong order. Check the letters: "distinctive". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • distinct: "distinct" is missing the ending. The speaker says "distinctive", with "ive" at the end.
Correct answer: urban

Explanation: Listen for "best known for his urban landscapes". It comes before "landscapes", so you need a word for town scenes.

  • rural: "Rural" means countryside, not towns or cities.
Correct answer: matchstick

Explanation: On the recording you hear "referred to as 'matchstick man'". It comes before man, so you need one short word, check the spelling with ch.

Wrong options:

  • matchstik: It leaves out the "c". Check the letters: "matchstick". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • match sticks: The sentence needs one single word, not two words.
Correct answer: portraits

Explanation: Listen again to "brooding portraits and the unpublished". It comes after "brooding", so you need more than one, do not forget the s.

Meaning: "portraits" means pictures of people, more than one.

Wrong options:

  • portriats: Two letters are in the wrong order. The right spelling is "portraits". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
