Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. Type the missing words in each blank.
* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
Is  that  person  really  glad  to  see  me?  Or  are  they  just    polite?  Some  people  struggle  to  distinguish  a      grin  from  a  truly  happy  smile.  And  computers  have  found  this  task  even  more  difficult,  that  is,  until  researchers    a  program  to  detect  when  a  smile  is  genuine.
Visual  computing  researchers  at  the  University  of  Bradford  in  the  U.K.  started  with  software  for    a  changing  facial  expression.  This  program  can  examine  a  video  clip  of  a  human  head  and  identify  specific    around  the  eyes,  cheeks  and  mouth.  Then  the  program  tracks  the  details  moving  relative  to  each  other  as  the  face  smiles.  Next,  the  scientists  had  their  program    two  sets  of  video  clips.  In  one,  subjects  performed  posed  smiles.

Correct answer: being

Explanation: Here you hear "are they just being polite". It follows "just", so the word ends in ing.

Meaning: "being" means existing in that state.

Wrong options:

  • beeing: It adds an extra "e". Write "being". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • been: "been" has no ing. The sentence needs a word that shows a continuing state.
Correct answer: fake

Explanation: The speaker says "distinguish a fake grin from". The word comes before "grin", so you need a describing word.

Meaning: "fake" means not real.

Wrong options:

  • fak: It leaves out the "e". Write "fake". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • fakes: "fakes" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "fake", with no "s".
Correct answer: develop

Explanation: You hear "until researchers develop a program". After "researchers" you need an action word, the plain word.

Meaning: "develop" means to build or make something new.

Wrong options:

  • develope: It adds an extra "e". Write "develop". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • developed: "developed" has an extra "ed" at the end. The speaker says "develop".
Correct answer: simulating

Explanation: Listen for "software for simulating a changing facial". The word must be an action word and ends in ing.

Meaning: "simulating" means copying how something changes or behaves.

Wrong options:

  • simulatin: It leaves out the "g". The right spelling is "simulating". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • simulate: "simulate" is a close word, but it ends in "e". The speaker says "simulating", which ends in "ing".
Correct answer: details

Explanation: On the recording you hear "identify specific details around the". The word comes after "specific", so do not forget the s at the end.

Meaning: "details" means small parts or features.

Wrong options:

  • detales: It leaves out the "i" and it adds an extra "e". Write "details". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • detail: "detail" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "details", so write the "s".
Correct answer: analysing / analyzing

Explanation: Listen again to "had their program analysing two sets". After "program" the sentence calls for an action word ending in ing. You can write "analysing" or "analyzing". Both get the mark.

Meaning: "analysing" means examining carefully to find patterns or meaning.
