Many  kinds  of  satellites  built  for  scientific  purposes  now    Earth.  Long  before  the  Russian  satellite  Sputnik,  scientists  looked  forward  to  the  day  when  they  could  observe  Earth  and  the  universe  from  orbiting  satellites.  They  believed  these  devices  would  help  them  to    old  mysteries  and  to  make  new  discoveries  about  the  universe.  And  they  were  right.  In  1958,  the  first  satellite    by  the  United  States,  Explorer  1,  discovered  the  Van  Allen  radiation  belts  around  Earth.  Since  then,  other  scientific  satellites  have  added    to  our  knowledge  of  the  universe.  One  satellite,  in  particular,  the  Infrared  Astronomy  Satellite,  or  IRAS,  has  helped    out  many  mysteries  of  the  universe.

Correct answer: orbit

Explanation: You hear "now orbit Earth." The word after "now" is an action word for movement.

Meaning: "orbit" means to move around something in space.

Wrong options:

  • oribt: Two letters are in the wrong order. The right spelling is "orbit". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • orbits: "orbits" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "orbit", with no "s".
Correct answer: solve

Explanation: Listen for "help them to solve" You need an action word that means find an answer.

Meaning: "solve" means to find the answer to a problem.

Wrong options:

  • solv: It leaves out the "e". Check the letters: "solve". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • solved: "solved" has an extra "d" at the end. The speaker says "solve".
Correct answer: launched

Explanation: On the recording you hear "first satellite launched" This already happened, so the word ends in ed.

Meaning: "launched" means sent into space for the first time.

Wrong options:

  • launced: It leaves out the "h". Write "launched". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • launch: "launch" is missing the ending. The speaker says "launched", with "ed" at the end.
Correct answer: greatly

Explanation: Listen again to "added greatly to" It tells how much, ends in ly.

Meaning: "greatly" means to a large extent or amount.

Wrong options:

  • greately: It adds an extra "e". Write "greatly". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • great: "great" is missing the ending. The speaker says "greatly", with "ly" at the end.
Correct answer: figure

Explanation: Here you hear "helped figure out" It comes after "helped", so an action word follows.

Meaning: "figure" means to find an answer or understand something.

Wrong options:

  • figer: It has "e" where the word has "u" and it leaves out the "e". Write "figure". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • figured: "figured" has an extra "d" at the end. The speaker says "figure".
