Instructions ›

* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
Historically,  reasons  for  the  migration  of  Asians  to  the  United  States  were  similar  in  some  ways  to  those  for  the  Atlantic    of  Europeans  —  to  escape  from  poverty  and  civil  war  and  to  find  employment  opportunity  and  freedom.  Chinese  laborers  were    to  build  the  transcontinental  railroad  in  the  mid-19th  century  and  provide  domestic  services  in  cities  such  as  San  Francisco.  They  were  followed  by  the  Japanese  and  Filipinos  in  the  early  20th  century  who  labored  in  Hawaiian  ,  California  farms,  and  Alaskan  canneries.  Of  these  early  Asian  Americans,  only  the  Japanese  were    to  immigrate  as  families  at  the  insistence  of  the  Japanese  government.  For  these  early  generations,  Asians  in  America  were  largely    communities  of    sojourners,  with  male  to  female  ratios  as  high  as  10  to  1.  Asian-American  children  in  those  early  years  were  rare.

Correct answer: migration

Explanation: Here you hear "Atlantic migration of Europeans". It comes after "Atlantic", so you need a word for a thing.

Meaning: "migration" means movement of people from one place to another.

Wrong options:

  • migraton: It leaves out the "i". The right spelling is "migration". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • immigration: This is a different word students type by sound. The sentence needs the general movement word.
Correct answer: recruited

Explanation: The speaker says "Chinese laborers were recruited to build". This is an action word and it already happened, so it ends in ed.

Meaning: "recruited" means hired or asked to join work.

Wrong options:

  • recruted: It leaves out the "i". The right spelling is "recruited". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • required: This is a different word students type by sound. It means needed, not hired.
Correct answer: plantations

Explanation: You hear "labored in Hawaiian plantations, California farms". It comes after "Hawaiian", so you need a place word and more than one.

Meaning: "plantations" means large farms where many workers labored.

Wrong options:

  • plantantions: It adds an extra "n". Check the letters: "plantations". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • plantation: "plantation" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "plantations", so write the "s".
Correct answer: allowed

Explanation: Listen for "only the Japanese were allowed to immigrate". This already happened, so the word ends in ed.

Meaning: "allowed" means given permission to do something.

Wrong options:

  • alowed: It leaves out the "l". Write "allowed". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
Correct answer: bachelor

Explanation: On the recording you hear "largely bachelor communities of". It comes before "communities", so you need a word for the type of community.

Meaning: "bachelor" means made up mainly of single men.

Wrong options:

  • bacherlor: It adds an extra "r". The right spelling is "bachelor". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • bachelors: "bachelors" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "bachelor", with no "s".
Correct answer: temporary

Explanation: Listen again to "communities of temporary sojourners". You need a describing word and it ends in ary.

Meaning: "temporary" means lasting for a short time.

Wrong options:

  • tempory: It leaves out the "ar". The right spelling is "temporary". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • temporarily: "temporarily" is a close word, but it ends in "ily". The speaker says "temporary", which ends in "y".
