Practice Listening: Fill in the Blanks (Type In) ID: #35949 Short A second experiment
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. Type the missing words in each blank.
* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
A  second  experiment  involved  a  newly  invented  device  that  could    very  high-frequency  sounds  –  much  higher  than  humans  can  hear.  They  found  that  when  the  bats  were  ,  the  device  detected  high-frequency  sounds.  It  also    the  fact  that  the  sounds  were  detected  more  often  if  the  bat  was  approaching  an  object.  Uh…that  is,  the  bats  made  more  calls  as  they  got  closer  to  an    they  wanted  to  avoid.  Finally,  the  two  scientists  used  other  new  technology  to  measure  how  the  cells  in  the    ears  of  the  bats  respond  to  sounds,  and  they  found  that  the  bats  cells  responded  to  sounds  much  higher  than  a  human  can  hear.  So,  really,  the  best  way  to  prove  something  is  to  do  so  in    ways.

Correct answer: detect

Explanation: Listen again to "device that could detect very". You need an action word.

Meaning: "detect" means find or notice.

Wrong options:

  • detekt: It has "k" where the word has "c". Check the letters: "detect". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
Correct answer: flying

Explanation: Here you hear "when the bats were flying". It comes after "were", so the word ends in ing.

Meaning: "flying" means moving through the air.

Wrong options:

  • flyng: It leaves out the "i". The right spelling is "flying". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
Correct answer: measured

Explanation: The speaker says "It also measured the fact". This already happened, so the word ends in ed.

Meaning: "measured" means checked or recorded.

Wrong options:

  • mesured: It leaves out the "a". The right spelling is "measured". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • measures: "measures" is a close word, but it ends in "s". The speaker says "measured", which ends in "d".
Correct answer: object

Explanation: You hear "closer to an object they". It comes after "an", so you need a word for a thing.

Meaning: "object" means a thing or item.

Wrong options:

  • obect: It leaves out the "j". Write "object". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
Correct answer: inner

Explanation: Listen for "cells in the inner ears". It comes before "ears", so you need a word meaning inside.

Meaning: "inner" means inside or near the centre.

Wrong options:

  • internal: Internal is different. The recording used 'inner'.
Correct answer: multiple

Explanation: On the recording you hear "in multiple ways." You need a word that means more than one.

Meaning: "multiple" means more than one.

Wrong options:

  • mutiple: It leaves out the "l". Write "multiple". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
