We  are  trying  to  understand  the  locomotion  of  one  of  our  closest  living  ,  which  is  the  orangutan,  and  also  the  locomotion  of  all  of  the  apes  and  the  common  ancestor  of  humans  and  the  other  apes.  And  in  that  area,  we  have  had  a  big  problem  ,  and  that  we  know  a  lot  about  how  they  move  around  the  forest.  I've  been  out  to  the  forest  and  spent  a  year  recording  the    types  of  locomotion  they  use,  but  we  have  no  idea  about  the  energetic  cost  of  how  they  move  around  the  forest  and  the    that  they  find  to  problems  of  moving  around  the  canopy.  And  what  we're  doing  here  is  using  the  park  or  athletes  as  an  analogy  for  a  large  bodied  ape  moving  around  a  complex    and  getting  them  to  move  around  in  the  course  that  we've  made  that  they've  never  seen  before.  And  we're  going  to    their  energetic  expenditure  while  they're  doing  it.

Correct answer: relatives

Explanation: You hear "closest living relatives, which". The sentence needs a word for a group related to us.

Meaning: "relatives" means animals that are related to humans.

Wrong options:

  • relitives: It has "i" where the word has "a". Check the letters: "relatives". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • relative: "relative" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "relatives", so write the "s".
Correct answer: traditionally

Explanation: Listen for "a big problem traditionally, and". You need a word that tells when, so it ends in ly.

Meaning: "traditionally" means in the usual way over time.

Wrong options:

  • traditonally: It leaves out the "i". The right spelling is "traditionally". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • traditional: "traditional" is missing the ending. The speaker says "traditionally", with "ly" at the end.
Correct answer: different

Explanation: On the recording you hear "recording the different types". The sentence needs a describing word before types.

Meaning: "different" means not the same, more than one kind.

Wrong options:

  • diffrent: It leaves out the "e". The right spelling is "different". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • difference: "difference" is a close word, but it ends in "ce". The speaker says "different", which ends in "t".
Correct answer: solutions

Explanation: Listen again to "and the solutions that they". You need a word for more than one answer, so do not forget the s at the end.

Meaning: "solutions" means the answers they find to problems.

Wrong options:

  • soluitons: Two letters are in the wrong order. Write "solutions". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • solution: "solution" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "solutions", so write the "s".
Correct answer: environment

Explanation: Here you hear "complex environment and getting". The word comes after complex, so you need a word for a place.

Meaning: "environment" means the surrounding area or habitat.

Wrong options:

  • enviroment: It leaves out the "n". Write "environment". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • environments: "environments" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "environment", with no "s".
Correct answer: record

Explanation: The speaker says "we're going to record their energetic". You need a short action word meaning to write down or measure.

Meaning: "record" means to measure or write down what happens.

Wrong options:

  • recod: It leaves out the "r". Write "record". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • recorded: "recorded" has an extra "ed" at the end. The speaker says "record".
