Smartphone  battery  down  to  10  percent?  Time  to  turn  down  the  brightness  on  the  screen,  right?  It's  a  classic  strategy  to  squeeze  more  juice  from  the  battery.  And  it  works.  But  that  trick  might  be  less    than  you  think.  Because  it  turns  out  nearly  half  the  battery  drain  on  a  phone  happens  when  the  screen's  not  even  on.  So  says  a  study    at  a  meeting  of  the  Association  for    Machinery,  in  Portland,  Oregon.  Researchers  eavesdropped  on  the  activity  of  more  than  1,500  Android  phones  -  specifically,  the  Samsung  Galaxy  S3  and  S4.  They  used  an  app  they  developed  called  eStar  Energy  Saver.  The  app  logs  the  energy  drain  of  the  phone's  apps  and  activities  as  they  happen.  (And  you  can  try  out  eStar  Energy  Saver  yourself,  if  you  have  an  Android.)  They  found  that  some  45  percent  of  the  battery  drain  happened  while  the  screen  was  off.  And  a  lot  of  that  energy  suck  was  apps  updating  in  the  background  -  downloading  headlines  and  weather,  while  you're  not    using  them.  And  different  versions  of  the  same  app    different  energy  supplies.

Correct answer: effective

Explanation: The speaker says "less effective than you think". You need a describing word that ends in ive.

Meaning: "effective" means working well or producing the result.

Wrong options:

  • effectiv: It leaves out the "e". The right spelling is "effective". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • efficient: This is a different word. It sounds different and changes the meaning.
Correct answer: presented

Explanation: You hear "study presented at a meeting". The sentence needs a past action word, so add ed at the end.

Meaning: "presented" means shown or told to people at the meeting.

Wrong options:

  • presnted: It leaves out the "e". Check the letters: "presented". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • present: "present" is missing the ending. The speaker says "presented", with "ed" at the end.
Correct answer: computing

Explanation: Listen for "Association for computing Machinery". It needs the field word for computers, not the machine.

Meaning: "computing" means work with computers or computer science.

Wrong options:

  • comuting: It leaves out the "p". Write "computing". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • computer: "computer" is a close word, but it ends in "er". The speaker says "computing", which ends in "ing".
Correct answer: actively

Explanation: On the recording you hear "while you're not actively using them". You need a word that tells how, so it ends in ly.

Meaning: "actively" means doing something with attention or use.

Wrong options:

  • activly: It leaves out the "e". Check the letters: "actively". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • activity: "activity" is a close word, but it ends in "ity". The speaker says "actively", which ends in "ely".
Correct answer: require

Explanation: Listen again to "same app require different energy". The sentence talks about more than one, so no s at the end.

Meaning: "require" means need or need to have.

Wrong options:

  • requir: It leaves out the "e". The right spelling is "require". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • requires: "requires" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "require", with no "s".
