Practice Listening: Fill in the Blanks (Type In) ID: #4005 Medium Fish
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. Type the missing words in each blank.
* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
Most  of  the  genes  found  in  fish  are  also  found  in  humans  –  and  most  of  the  genes  that  cause  disease  in  fish  also  cause  disease  in  humans.  The  human    system,  which  fights  off  disease,  is  a  lot  like  the  immune  system  of  fish.  Ramakrishna's  research  is  focused  on  tuberculosis  in  humans  –  a  disease  that  affects  millions  of  people  worldwide.  Without  treatment,  TB  can  be  life  threatening.  We  tend  to  associate  human  TB  with  the  lungs,  and  of  course  fish  don’t  have  lungs.  TB  does    the  lungs  but  it  can  affect  almost  all  our  organs.  In  humans,  some  40%  of  TB  infection  is  not  in  the  lungs  but    in  the  body.  It  can  be  in  the  brain,  bone,  kidney,  intestine  and    organs.  Fish  are  affected  by  a  close  relative  of  the  human  TB  bacterium.  If  we  can  work  out  how  TB  works  in  fish,  and  how  to    it  and  treat  it  in  fish,  then  we’re  a  step    to  solving  a  major  health  problem  in  humans.

Correct answer: immune

Explanation: Listen again to "The human immune system". It comes after "The human", so you need a word for a body defence system.

Meaning: "immune" means protecting the body from disease.

Wrong options:

  • imune: It leaves out the "m". Check the letters: "immune". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • immuno: "immuno" is a close word, but it ends in "o". The speaker says "immune", which ends in "e".
Correct answer: affect

Explanation: Here you hear "TB does affect the lungs". It comes before "the lungs", so you need an action word.

Meaning: "affect" means to change or harm something.

Wrong options:

  • afect: It leaves out the "f". Check the letters: "affect". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • effect: "Effect" is a different word that means a result, not the action here.
Correct answer: elsewhere

Explanation: The speaker says "but elsewhere in the body". It comes before "in the body", so you need a word for another place.

Meaning: "elsewhere" means in a different place.

Wrong options:

  • elseware: It has "a" where the word has "he". The right spelling is "elsewhere". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • everywhere: "Everywhere" means in all places, not just a different place.
Correct answer: reproductive

Explanation: You hear "intestine and reproductive organs". It comes after "and", so you need a word for a type of organ.

Meaning: "reproductive" means related to having babies or making new life.

Wrong options:

  • reproductuve: It has "u" where the word has "i". Write "reproductive". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
Correct answer: prevent

Explanation: Listen for "how to prevent it and treat it". It follows "to", so you need an action word that ends in t.

Meaning: "prevent" means to stop something from happening.

Wrong options:

  • preven: It leaves out the "t". Check the letters: "prevent". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
Correct answer: closer

Explanation: On the recording you hear "we're a step closer to solving". You need a word that shows nearer, it ends in er.

Meaning: "closer" means more near.

Wrong options:

  • closser: It adds an extra "s". The right spelling is "closer". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • closest: "closest" is a close word, but it ends in "st". The speaker says "closer", which ends in "r".
