Practice Listening: Fill in the Blanks (Type In) ID: #4007 Short Justice
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. Type the missing words in each blank.
* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
Recently,  we  were  asked  to  design  a  center  for  social  justice  leadership  called  the  Arcus  Center.  They  asked  us  for  a  building  that  could  break  down    barriers  between  different  groups  and  in  doing  so,  create  possibilities  for  meaningful  conversations  around  social  justice.  The  students  wanted  a  place  for  exchange.  They  thought  a  place  for  preparing  food  together  could  do  that.  And  they  wanted  to  be  welcoming  to  the    community.  They  thought  a  fireplace  could  draw  people  in  and  help  start  conversations.  And  everybody  wanted  the  work  of  social  justice  to  be    to  the  outside  world.  There  really  wasn't  a  precedent  for  this  kind  of  space,  so  we  looked  around  the  globe  and  found  examples  of  community    houses.  And  community  meeting  houses  are  places  where  there's  very  specific  relationships  between  people,  like  this  one  in  Mali,  where  the    gather.  The  low  roof  keeps  everybody  seated  and  at    eye  level.

Correct answer: traditional

Explanation: The speaker says "break down traditional barriers". It comes before "barriers", so you need a describing word.

Meaning: "traditional" means usual or long-held.

Wrong options:

  • traditonal: It leaves out the "i". Write "traditional". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
Correct answer: cultural

Explanation: You hear "a place for cultural exchange." It comes after "for", so the word ends in al.

Meaning: "cultural" means about culture or traditions.

Wrong options:

  • cultureal: It adds an extra "e". Check the letters: "cultural". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
Correct answer: outside

Explanation: Listen for "welcoming to the outside community". It comes after "the", so you need a word for people not inside.

Meaning: "outside" means not part of the group or not inside.

Wrong options:

  • outisde: Two letters are in the wrong order. Write "outside". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • outsider: "outsider" has an extra "r" at the end. The speaker says "outside".
Correct answer: visible

Explanation: On the recording you hear "visible to the outside." It means able to be seen.

Meaning: "visible" means able to be seen by others.

Wrong options:

  • visable: It has "a" where the word has "i". The right spelling is "visible". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • invisible: This is the opposite meaning. The speaker wanted something that can be seen.
Correct answer: meeting

Explanation: Listen again to "community meeting houses." It comes after "community", so you need a gathering word.

Meaning: "meeting" means a place where people gather or come together.

Wrong options:

  • meting: It leaves out the "e". Check the letters: "meeting". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
Correct answer: elders

Explanation: Here you hear "where the elders gather." It means older respected people, more than one, ends in s.

Meaning: "elders" means older respected people in the community.

Wrong options:

  • eldres: Two letters are in the wrong order. Write "elders". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • elder: "elder" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "elders", so write the "s".
Correct answer: equal

Explanation: The speaker says "at equal eye level." It comes before "eye", so you need a word about sameness.

Meaning: "equal" means the same height or level as others.

Wrong options:

  • equel: It has "e" where the word has "a". Write "equal". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
