Practice Listening: Fill in the Blanks (Type In) ID: #4017 Short Cold
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. Type the missing words in each blank.
* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
Now  researchers  have  stopped  light  cold  and  then  brought  it  back  to  life  or  light  in  an    different  place.  The  Harvard  researchers  sent  a  light  pulse  into  a  sodium  cloud  cooled  to  about  460  degrees  below  zero.  That’s  the  theoretical  point  where    stops  all  movement.  The  light  pulse  was  compressed  by  a  factor  of  about  50  million  at  the    temperature,  and  it  actually  changed  state  sort  of  like  frozen  water.  But  it  also  split  into  two  forms  of  matter.  One  stayed    in  the  sodium,  while  the  other  crawled  along  at  just  200  meters  per  hour.  That  second  form  called  a  matter  wave  contains  the  exact  information  of  the    light  wave.  And  when  researchers  sent  it  into  a  second  sodium  cloud  a  fraction  of  a  millimeter  away,  the  wave  was    back  into  light.  And  since  fiber  optic    use  light,  that  means  that  someday  we  may  be  able  to  stop  them,  store  them  and  turn  them  back  on,  just  like  a  light  switch.

Correct answer: entirely

Explanation: Listen again to "in an entirely different." You need a word that means completely.

Meaning: "entirely" means completely.

Wrong options:

  • entireally: It adds an extra "al". The right spelling is "entirely". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • entire: "entire" is missing the ending. The speaker says "entirely", with "ly" at the end.
Correct answer: matter

Explanation: Here you hear "where matter stops." You need a word for the stuff things are made of.

Meaning: "matter" means physical substance or material.

Wrong options:

  • materr: It leaves out the "t" and it adds an extra "r". Write "matter". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
Correct answer: extreme

Explanation: The speaker says "at the extreme temperature." You need a describing word before temperature.

Meaning: "extreme" means very far from normal in degree.

Wrong options:

  • extream: It adds an extra "a" and it leaves out the "e". Check the letters: "extreme". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • extensive: That word means large in size, not very high or low in degree.
Correct answer: frozen

Explanation: You hear "stayed frozen in the sodium." After 'stayed' you need a describing word, it ends in en.

Meaning: "frozen" means turned hard and not moving like ice.

Wrong options:

  • frosen: It has "s" where the word has "z". Check the letters: "frozen". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • freeze: That is the action. The sentence needs a describing word, not the action.
Correct answer: original

Explanation: Listen for "the original light." "original" comes after 'the', so it means the first one.

Meaning: "original" means the first or the same as before.

Wrong options:

  • orginal: It leaves out the "i". The right spelling is "original". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • originally: "originally" has an extra "ly" at the end. The speaker says "original".
Correct answer: converted

Explanation: On the recording you hear "was converted back." You need the past form with ed.

Meaning: "converted" means changed from one form into another.

Wrong options:

  • convertid: It has "i" where the word has "e". Check the letters: "converted". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • convert: "convert" is missing the ending. The speaker says "converted", with "ed" at the end.
Correct answer: communications

Explanation: Listen again to "fiber optic communications." You need more than one, so the word ends in s.

Meaning: "communications" means systems that send information.

Wrong options:

  • comunications: It leaves out the "m". Write "communications". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • communication: "communication" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "communications", so write the "s".
