Correct answer: commission

Explanation: Listen again to "the election commission in Kenya". You need a word for the group that runs voting.

Meaning: "commission" means the group that organises and runs the vote here.

Wrong options:

  • comission: It leaves out the "m". Check the letters: "commission". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • commissioner: "commissioner" has an extra "er" at the end. The speaker says "commission".
Correct answer: presidential

Explanation: Here you hear "Tuesday's presidential election was". After "Tuesday's" you need a word naming the type of election, for president.

Meaning: "presidential" means about the election for the president.

Wrong options:

  • presidency: "presidency" is a close word, but it ends in "cy". The speaker says "presidential", which ends in "tial".
Correct answer: rejected

Explanation: The speaker says "has rejected the results." The action already happened, so the word ends in ed.

Meaning: "rejected" means refused to accept the results.

Wrong options:

  • rejectted: It adds an extra "t". Write "rejected". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • reversed: That means they changed the results, not refused to accept them.
Correct answer: expressed

Explanation: You hear "World leaders have expressed concern". After "have" you need an action word in the past, ends in ed.

Meaning: "expressed" means showed or said their worry.

Wrong options:

  • exprssed: It leaves out the "e". Check the letters: "expressed". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • express: "express" is missing the ending. The speaker says "expressed", with "ed" at the end.
Correct answer: diplomatic

Explanation: Listen for "further diplomatic efforts." It comes before "efforts", so you need a describing word about talks.

Meaning: "diplomatic" means using talks and negotiation between countries.

Wrong options:

  • diplomacy: "diplomacy" is a close word, but it ends in "cy". The speaker says "diplomatic", which ends in "tic".
