In  Cambodia  and  Thailand,  elephants  have  learned  to    their  right  of  way  as  wildlife  on  the  road  to  stop  passing  sugar  cane  trucks  and  steal  a  quick  snack.  These  elephants  are  known  to  be  very  intelligent  and  resourceful,  and  they  have  quickly  figured  out  that  they  can  use  their  size  and    to  their  advantage.  When  they  see  a  sugar  cane  truck  coming,  they  will  often  step  out  into  the  road  and  block  the  truck's  path.  The  driver  of  the  truck  will  then  have  no  choice  but  to  stop,  and  the  elephant  will  quickly  reach  up  and  grab  a  few  stalks  of  sugarcane  to  eat.  This  behavior  has  become  so  common  that  there  are  now  signs    on  roads  in  these  areas    drivers  to  be  on  the  lookout  for  elephants.  In  some  cases,  elephants  have  even  been  known  to  damage  the  trucks  or  injure  the  drivers.  However,  for  the  most  part,  these  encounters  are    harmless.  The  elephants  are  simply  looking  for  a  quick  snack,  and  they  are  not  interested  in  causing  any  harm.

Correct answer: exploit

Explanation: On the recording you hear "learned to exploit their". The word after "to" is an action word, so watch the t at the end.

Meaning: "exploit" means to use something to get an advantage.

Wrong options:

  • exploite: It adds an extra "e". The right spelling is "exploit". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • explore: "explore" is a close word, but it ends in "re". The speaker says "exploit", which ends in "it".
Correct answer: strength

Explanation: Listen again to "use their size and strength to". The sentence needs a word for power, so watch the ng at the end.

Meaning: "strength" means physical power.

Wrong options:

  • strengh: It leaves out the "t". The right spelling is "strength". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
Correct answer: posted

Explanation: Here you hear "there are now signs posted on". The word comes after "signs", so you need a past action word ending in ed.

Meaning: "posted" means put up in a place for people to see.

Wrong options:

  • postd: It leaves out the "e". Check the letters: "posted". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
Correct answer: warning

Explanation: The speaker says "on roads in these areas warning drivers to". The next word is a word for a thing, person or idea, so it ends in ing.

Meaning: "warning" means a notice about possible danger.

Wrong options:

  • warnng: It leaves out the "i". Check the letters: "warning". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • warn: "warn" is missing the ending. The speaker says "warning", with "ing" at the end.
Correct answer: relatively

Explanation: You hear "these encounters are relatively harmless." The word tells how much, so it ends in ly.

Meaning: "relatively" means to some degree but not completely.
