There  are  more  than  160  known  species  of  chameleons.  The  main    is  in  Africa  and  Madagascar,  and  other    regions,  although  some  species  are  also  found  in  parts  of  southern  Europe  and  Asia.  There  are  introduced    in  Hawaii  and  probably  in  California  and  Florida  too.  New  species  are  still  discovered  quite  .  Dr.  Andrew  Marshall,  a  conservationist  from  York  University,  was  surveying  monkeys  in  Tanzania,  when  he  stumbled  across  as  twig    in  the  Magombrea  forest  which,  frightened,  coughed  up  a  chameleon  and  fled.  Though  a  colleague    him  not  to  touch  it  because  of  the  risk  of  venom,  Marshall  suspected  it  might  be  a  new  species.

Correct answer: distribution

Explanation: Here you hear "The main distribution is in". The sentence needs a word for where things are found.

Meaning: "distribution" means where something lives or is found.

Wrong options:

  • disribution: It leaves out the "t". Check the letters: "distribution". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • distributions: "distributions" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "distribution", with no "s".
Correct answer: tropical

Explanation: The speaker says "and other tropical regions". You need a describing word for warm, wet places.

Meaning: "tropical" means related to hot, rainy areas near the equator.

Wrong options:

  • tropcal: It leaves out the "i". The right spelling is "tropical". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
Correct answer: populations

Explanation: You hear "There are introduced populations in". The sentence needs more than one group, so add s.

Meaning: "populations" means groups of the animals living in an area.

Wrong options:

  • population: "population" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "populations", so write the "s".
Correct answer: frequently

Explanation: Listen for "New species are still discovered quite frequently". You need a word that tells how often, so it ends in ly.

Meaning: "frequently" means happening many times or often.

Wrong options:

  • frecuently: It has "c" where the word has "q". Write "frequently". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
Correct answer: snake

Explanation: On the recording you hear "he stumbled across as twig snake in". The missing word names an animal here.

Meaning: "snake" means a long, legless reptile.

Wrong options:

  • sanke: Two letters are in the wrong order. Check the letters: "snake". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
Correct answer: persuaded

Explanation: Listen again to "Though a colleague persuaded him not". The action already happened, so the word ends in ed.

Meaning: "persuaded" means he talked to him and changed his mind.

Wrong options:

  • persauded: Two letters are in the wrong order. Write "persuaded". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • persuade: "persuade" is missing the ending. The speaker says "persuaded", with "d" at the end.
