You  may  well  ask  why  Science  did  not  warn  us  of  global  warming  sooner;  I  think  that  there  are  several  reasons.  We  were  from  the  1970s  until  the  end  of  the  century  distracted  by  the  important  global  problem  of  stratospheric    depletion,  which  we  knew  was  manageable.  We  threw  all  our  efforts  into  it  and  succeeded  but  had  little  time  to  spend  on  climate  change.  Climate  science  was  also  neglected  because  twentieth-century  Science  failed  to    the  true  nature  of  Earth  as  a    self-regulating  entity.  Biologists  were  so  carried  away  by  Darwin's  great  vision  that  they  failed  to  see  that  living  things  were  tightly  coupled  to  their  material  environment  and  that  evolution  concerns  the  whole  Earth  system  with  living  organisms  an    part  of  it.  Earth  is  not  the  Goldilocks  planet  of  the  solar  system  sitting  at  the  right  place  for  life.  It  was  in  this  favourable  state  some  two  billion  years  ago,  but  now  our  planet  has  to  work  hard,  against  ever-increasing  heat  from  the  Sun,  to  keep  itself  .  We  have  chosen  the  worst  of  times  to  add  to  its  difficulties.

Correct answer: ozone

Explanation: The term 'ozone' fits grammatically as it is a noun that refers to a specific layer in the atmosphere. The context discusses stratospheric depletion, which directly relates to ozone, making it the most appropriate choice.

Meaning: 'Ozone' refers to a gas composed of three oxygen atoms, crucial for blocking harmful ultraviolet radiation in the Earth's stratosphere.

Wrong options:

  • ensigns: 'Ensigns' refers to flags or symbols, which does not relate to atmospheric science or the context of depletion.
  • contracted: 'Contracted' is a verb that means to become smaller or to enter into a formal agreement, which does not fit the context of atmospheric layers.
  • deplete: 'Deplete' is a verb meaning to reduce in quantity, which does not serve as a noun to describe what is being depleted.
  • responsive: 'Responsive' is an adjective that describes the ability to react, which does not fit as a noun in this context.
  • integral: 'Integral' is an adjective that means essential or necessary, which does not fit as a noun related to atmospheric conditions.
  • recognise: 'Recognise' is a verb meaning to identify or acknowledge, which does not fit as a noun in this context.
  • habitable: 'Habitable' is an adjective that describes the ability to support life, which does not fit as a noun in this context.
Correct answer: recognise

Explanation: The verb 'recognise' fits grammatically as it aligns with the subject 'Science' and the context of acknowledging the true nature of Earth. It is essential for conveying the failure to identify critical aspects of climate science.

Meaning: 'Recognise' means to identify or acknowledge something as valid or true.

Wrong options:

  • ensigns: 'Ensigns' refers to flags or symbols, which does not fit as a verb in this context.
  • contracted: 'Contracted' is a verb that means to become smaller or to enter into a formal agreement, which does not fit the context of acknowledging scientific truths.
  • ozone: 'Ozone' is a noun and does not serve as a verb in this context.
  • deplete: 'Deplete' is a verb meaning to reduce in quantity, which does not fit the context of recognizing or acknowledging.
  • responsive: 'Responsive' is an adjective that describes the ability to react, which does not fit as a verb in this context.
  • integral: 'Integral' is an adjective meaning essential or necessary, which does not fit as a verb in this context.
  • habitable: 'Habitable' is an adjective that describes the ability to support life, which does not fit as a verb in this context.
Correct answer: responsive

Explanation: The adjective 'responsive' fits grammatically as it describes the nature of Earth in the context of being self-regulating. It conveys the idea that Earth reacts to changes in its environment.

Meaning: 'Responsive' means reacting quickly and positively to changes or stimuli.

Wrong options:

  • ensigns: 'Ensigns' refers to flags or symbols, which does not fit as an adjective describing Earth.

  • recognise: 'Recognise' is a verb and does not fit as an adjective in this context.
  • habitable: 'Habitable' is an adjective that describes the ability to support life, which does not fit the context of describing Earth's nature.
Correct answer: integral

Explanation: The adjective 'integral' fits grammatically as it describes living organisms as essential components of the Earth system. It aligns with the context of discussing the interconnectedness of life and the environment.

Meaning: 'Integral' means essential or necessary for completeness.

Wrong options:

  • responsive: 'Responsive' is an adjective that describes the ability to react, which does not fit the context of describing the essential nature of living organisms.
  • recognise: 'Recognise' is a verb and does not fit as an adjective in this context.
  • habitable: 'Habitable' is an adjective that describes the ability to support life, which does not fit the context of describing the role of living organisms.
Correct answer: habitable

Explanation: The adjective 'habitable' fits grammatically as it describes the state of Earth in relation to supporting life. The context discusses the challenges Earth faces in maintaining conditions suitable for life.

Meaning: 'Habitable' means capable of supporting life.

Wrong options:

  • ensigns: 'Ensigns' refers to flags or symbols, which does not fit as an adjective describing the state of Earth.
