By  the  1820s  Bentham  had  become  a  well-known  ,  both  in  Britain  and  in  other  parts  of  the  world.  His  ideas  were  to  influence  the  reforms  of  public  administration  made  during  the  nineteenth  century,  and  his  writings  are  still  at  the  centre  of  academic  debate,  especially  regarding  social  policy,  legal  positivism,  and  welfare  economics.  Bentham  died  on  6  June  1832,  a  day  before  the  first  Reform  Act  was  given  Royal  Assent.  As  per  the  directions  in  his  will,  Bentham's  body  was  dissected  by  his  friend,  the  surgeon  Thomas  Southwood  Smith,  and  his  skeleton  was    as  the  Auto-Icon.  Research  into  Bentham's  thought  and  life  continues  today  at  UCL's  Bentham  Project,  set  up  in  the  early  1960s  with  the  aim    producing  the  first  scholarly  edition  of  his  works  and  correspondence.  This  edition  is  projected  to  run  to  some  eighty  volumes.  Members  of  the  public  are  invited  to  assist  in  this  massive  editorial  task  by  helping  to    Bentham's  manuscripts  via  Transcribe  Bentham.

Correct answer: figure

Explanation: The word 'figure' serves as a noun that refers to a notable person or entity, which fits grammatically as it complements the verb 'had become.' It aligns with the context of discussing Bentham's prominence in Britain and beyond.

Meaning: A 'figure' refers to a person who is significant or well-known in a particular field or context.

Wrong options:

  • envisaged: 'Envisaged' is a verb meaning to imagine or foresee, which does not fit as it does not describe a person or entity.
  • transcend: 'Transcend' is a verb meaning to go beyond limits, which does not fit grammatically as it cannot describe Bentham as a person.
  • characteristic: 'Characteristic' is a noun or adjective that describes a feature or quality, which does not fit as it does not refer to a person.
Correct answer: preserved

Explanation: The term 'preserved' is a verb that indicates the action of maintaining Bentham's skeleton in a specific state, fitting grammatically as it follows the passive construction 'was.' It is contextually appropriate as it describes what happened to his body after dissection.

Meaning: 'Preserved' means to keep something in its original state or condition, especially for future use or study.

Wrong options:

  • envisaged: 'Envisaged' does not fit as it is a verb that means to imagine or foresee, which does not relate to the action taken on Bentham's body.
  • figure: 'Figure' is a noun that does not fit in this context as it does not describe an action related to Bentham's remains.
  • transcend: 'Transcend' is a verb meaning to go beyond limits, which does not apply to the context of preserving a body.
  • characteristic: 'Characteristic' is a noun or adjective that describes a feature, which does not fit as it does not describe an action.
Correct answer: of

Explanation: The preposition 'of' is used to indicate the purpose or aim of the project, fitting grammatically as it connects the aim with the action of producing. It is contextually relevant as it clarifies what the aim is regarding Bentham's works.

Meaning: 'Of' indicates belonging or purpose, in this case, the aim related to producing the scholarly edition.

Wrong options:

  • envisaged: 'Envisaged' is a verb that does not fit as it does not indicate a relationship of purpose or belonging.
  • transcend: 'Transcend' is a verb meaning to go beyond limits, which does not fit grammatically or contextually in this sentence.
  • figure: 'Figure' is a noun that does not indicate purpose and does not fit in this context.
  • characteristic: 'Characteristic' is a noun or adjective that describes a feature, which does not fit as it does not indicate purpose.
Correct answer: transcribe

Explanation: The verb 'transcribe' fits grammatically as it follows the preposition 'to' and indicates the action that the public is invited to perform. Contextually, it aligns with the task of converting Bentham's manuscripts into written form.

Meaning: 'Transcribe' means to write down or copy something, especially from one form to another.

Wrong options:

  • envisaged: 'Envisaged' is a verb meaning to imagine or foresee, which does not fit as it does not describe an action related to manuscripts.
  • figure: 'Figure' is a noun that does not fit as it does not describe an action and cannot be used in this context.
  • transcend: 'Transcend' is a verb meaning to go beyond limits, which does not apply to the action of working with manuscripts.
  • characteristic: 'Characteristic' is a noun or adjective that describes a feature, which does not fit as it does not describe an action.
