Correct answer: demonstrate

Explanation: The word 'demonstrate' is a verb that fits grammatically in the infinitive form following 'to,' indicating the purpose of building the Eiffel Tower. It aligns with the context of showing the strength of iron compared to stone.

Meaning: 'Demonstrate' means to show or prove something clearly.

Wrong options:

  • coveted: 'Coveted' is an adjective meaning greatly desired, which does not fit the context of showing or proving something.
  • mirror: 'Mirror' is a verb that means to reflect, which does not convey the intended meaning of showing strength.
  • constructed: 'Constructed' is the past participle of 'construct,' which does not fit after 'to' as it does not indicate purpose.
  • skeleton: 'Skeleton' is a noun that refers to a framework, which does not fit grammatically in this context.
  • decorated: 'Decorated' is a past participle that implies embellishment, which does not relate to the purpose of demonstrating strength.
Correct answer: constructed

Explanation: The term 'constructed' is the past participle form of the verb 'construct,' fitting grammatically in the passive voice structure of the sentence. It indicates that the Home Insurance Building was built in the past.

Meaning: 'Constructed' means built or made, particularly in reference to buildings or structures.

Wrong options:

  • demonstrate: 'Demonstrate' is a verb that does not fit in the passive construction needed here, as it does not indicate the action of building.
  • coveted: 'Coveted' is an adjective that does not fit the context of describing the action of building.
  • mirror: 'Mirror' is a verb that does not relate to the construction of a building and does not fit grammatically.
  • skeleton: 'Skeleton' is a noun that does not fit as it does not describe the action of building.
  • decorated: 'Decorated' is a past participle that implies embellishment, which does not relate to the act of construction.
Correct answer: skeleton

Explanation: The word 'skeleton' is a noun that refers to the framework of a building. It fits grammatically as the object of the verb 'employ' and contextually describes the structural support used in the Home Insurance Building.

Meaning: 'Skeleton' refers to the underlying framework or structure of a building.

Wrong options:

  • demonstrate: 'Demonstrate' is a verb that does not fit as it does not serve as a noun in this context.
  • coveted: 'Coveted' is an adjective that does not relate to the structural aspect of a building.
  • mirror: 'Mirror' is a verb that does not fit grammatically or contextually as it does not describe a structural component.
