Now, a lot of skeptics might say, well, hey, this is all great, philosophically, this whole idea of mastery-based learning and its connection to mindset, students taking agency over their learning. It makes a lot of sense, but but it seems impractical. To actually do it with students it seems like every student would be on their own track. It would have to be personalized, you'd have to have private tutors, you'd have to work for worksheets for every student. And they're experiments, these aren't new ideas - there were experiments in Winnetka, Illinois, 100 years ago, where they did mastery-based learning and they saw great results, but they but they said it wouldn't scale because it was logistically difficult. The teacher had to give different worksheets to every student, give on-demand assessments. But now today, it's no longer impractical. We have the tools to do it. Students see an explanation at their own time and pace? Well there's on-demand video for that. They need practice? They need feedback? Well there's there's adaptive exercises readily available for students. And when that happens, all sorts of neat things happen. One, the students can actually master the concepts, but they're also building their growth mindset, they're building their grit, perseverance, they're taking agency over their learning. And all sorts of beautiful things can start to happen in the actual classroom. Instead of it being focused on the lecture, students can interact with each other. They can get deeper mastery over the material. They can go into simulations, Socratic dialogue. And, to appreciate what we're talking about and kind of the the tragedy of lost potential here, I'd like to give a little bit of a thought experiment.

Option 3: "Mastery-based learning enables students to take control over their learning. It used to be considered impractical as it was really difficult to scale it in logistical terms. But modern advancements have provided the necessary tools to achieve it."

Explanation: This option accurately summarizes the main idea of the text. It captures the essence of mastery-based learning allowing students to take control, acknowledges the past impracticality due to logistical challenges, and highlights how modern tools have made it feasible. The text supports this by discussing the evolution of mastery-based learning and the tools available today.

Option 1: "Being focused on the lecture makes easy for students to interact with each other. They can get deeper mastery over the material using simulation techniques and creating an environment influenced by Socratic terms."

Explanation: This option incorrectly states that being focused on the lecture facilitates student interaction, which contradicts the text's emphasis on moving away from lectures to promote interaction. The text highlights that mastery-based learning allows for deeper mastery through interaction and simulations, not through lectures.

Option 2: "The previous mindset was that teachers should take agency over their learning. It made a lot of sense, as everyone would be on their own track. Though, deeper mastery would call for personalized classes, which means additional expenses of private tutors."

Explanation: This option misrepresents the text by suggesting that teachers were previously seen as the ones taking agency over learning. The text clearly states that students are the ones taking agency in mastery-based learning. Additionally, it implies that personalized classes are a new concept, while the text discusses past experiments that faced logistical challenges.

Option 4: "Students want to see an explanation at their own time and pace. The experiments in Illinois proved that mastery-based learning is scalable, but a little logistically difficult. The teacher just had to give different worksheets to every student, and mastery is completely possible."

Explanation: This option incorrectly states that the experiments in Illinois proved mastery-based learning is scalable. The text indicates that while there were experiments, they concluded it wouldn't scale due to logistical difficulties. Furthermore, it misrepresents the text by suggesting that mastery is 'completely possible' without acknowledging the modern tools that now facilitate it.
