When societies were still mostly rural and agricultural, waste disposal was hardly an issue, partly because people tended to make use of everything and partly because there was plenty of space to bury rubbish. It was when societies became predominantly urban and industrial that problems arose - mainly to do with wealth. City authorities had a hard time trying to find efficient ways of getting rid of all the rubbish. One of these was to get people to sort out their rubbish into different types, just as these days we are encouraged to separate our rubbish into different categories for easier removal and recycling. So, for example, kitchen rubbish was set aside and used for feeding animals. However, fears of disease put an end to that. In fact, it wasn't until the 20th century that all waste was simply thrown together and ploughed into landfills.

Printed "dispersal", the speaker says "disposal"

Explanation: Listen again to "waste disposal was hardly". The spoken word is one letter shorter, so listen for the shorter word.

Printed "industrious", the speaker says "industrial"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "predominantly urban and industrial". The first letter is the same, so listen to the middle or end of the word.

Printed "real", the speaker says "wealth"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "problems arose mainly to do with wealth". The words start with different letters, so listen to the start of the word.

Printed "effective", the speaker says "efficient"

Explanation: The speaker says "had a hard time trying to find efficient", not "effective". The words are the same length, so listen to the end to tell them apart.

Printed "set", the speaker says "sort"

Explanation: Listen for "to sort out their rubbish into". The first letter is the same, so listen to the middle and end to hear the difference.

Printed "put", the speaker says "ploughed"

Explanation: You will hear "simply thrown together and ploughed into landfills". The printed word is short but the spoken word is much longer, so listen for the longer word.

"rubbish" matches the audio

Explanation: "bury rubbish." looks like a change because it is common, but the speaker says it exactly as printed. Do not click it.

"waste" matches the audio

Explanation: "all waste was simply thrown" may seem odd, but the speaker uses the same word here. Do not click it.
