We've all heard of the old saw about women who let themselves go after getting married. Well, female ticks take this post honeymoon weight-gain to extremes. After mating, female ticks in the family Ixodes increase their mass an astonishing 100 times, ballooning from the size of a sand grain to that of a kidney bean. This post-copulatory growth spurt is actually an important part of the tick's whole blood-sucking lifestyle. Female ticks need to fully engorge before they can lay eggs. But virgins are better off staying small so that they'll have more time to find a mate. Not that male ticks have anything against full-bodied females. It's just that ticks meet their matches while they're hanging around on their hosts. And if unwed females become too unwieldy they're more likely to get knocked off during a good grooming. As to what spurs the females to really bulk up, Ruben Kaufman of the university of Alberta finds that male ticks' semen contains proteins that trigger engorgement.

Printed "retaliatory", the speaker says "post copulatory"

Explanation: You will hear "This post-copulatory growth spurt". The page shows "retaliatory". Both end the same way, so listen to the start of the word.

Printed "reexported", the speaker says "important"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "an important part of". Click "reexported" here. It makes no sense in this sentence.

Printed "anyone", the speaker says "anything"

Explanation: Listen again to "have anything against full-bodied females". The printed word "anyone" is not what you hear. Both words start with "any", so listen to the end of the word.

Printed "seedy", the speaker says "unwieldy"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "become too unwieldy". "seedy" is on the page, but not in the audio. The word you hear is longer and starts with a different letter.

Printed "universe", the speaker says "university"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "of the university of Alberta". So "universe" is the changed word. The start is the same, so wait for the end of the word.

"Ixodes" matches the audio

Explanation: The name in "ticks in the family Ixodes" is rare. It looks like a trick, but the speaker says it exactly as printed. Do not click it.

"grooming" matches the audio

Explanation: "during a good grooming" may look strange to you. These words match the audio, so do not select this one.
