Londoners love their fish. And according to a new study, in the early 13th Century they suddenly started importing it from as far away as the Arctic near Norway. The research is in the journal Antiquity. About the year 1000, sea fishing increased significantly in northern Europe. To see how that increase influenced urban growth, researchers looked at 95 excavation sites in London. Which included about 3,000 bones from cod fish. Cod are decapitated before being dried for transport. So finding heads meant the fish were local. And the researchers found that as fish heads appear to decrease in the early 1200s, fish tails dramatically increased—a sign of importation, examination of the chemical isotopes in the tails matched those for fish in waters far to the north, probably off Norway close to the Arctic, more evidence of import.

Printed "mercerised", the speaker says "increased"

Explanation: Listen again to "sea fishing increased significantly". The page shows "mercerised" instead.

Printed "polymerization", the speaker says "excavation"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "95 excavation sites in". You will see "polymerization" in the text.

Printed "puppeteers", the speaker says "decrease"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "appear to decrease in". On the page it reads "puppeteers", not the spoken word.

Printed "manipulation", the speaker says "examination"

Explanation: The speaker says "examination of the chemical", not "manipulation". Both words end the same, so listen to the start.

Printed "monstrosity", the speaker says "probably"

Explanation: Listen for "probably off Norway close". The printed word "monstrosity" is much longer than the spoken word.

"Antiquity" matches the audio

Explanation: "The research is in the journal Antiquity." The name looks rare. The speaker says it exactly, so do not click it.

"cod" matches the audio

Explanation: "about 3,000 bones from cod fish." It looks odd. But the speaker reads it exactly, so do not click it.
