A good "poker face" can hide the quality of your cards. But your arms might still be giving away your hands. That's the finding of a study to come out in the journal Psychological Science. Volunteers watched videos of the World Series of Poker. The videos were edited so the subjects saw one of three different views of the players: the poker players' entire bodies from the table up, or just the players' faces or just the players' arms pushing chips into the pot. "When participants were watching chips being pushed into the center of the table by the players, it was only then could they acurately perceive how good a hand was better than chance. They couldn't do it for the whole body and if anything they were worse from just watching the face." Michael Slepian, a psychology doctoral student at Stanford University, and a co-author of the study. No pros were among the video watchers. But there's some evidence that, as might be expected, they'd be even better at catching arm cues.

Printed "confirming", the speaker says "watching"

Explanation: You will hear "watching chips being pushed". The first letters differ, so listen to the start of the word.

Printed "subtenancy", the speaker says "acurately"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "could they acurately perceive". The printed word starts with a different letter and ends differently.

Printed "seers", the speaker says "perceive"

Explanation: Listen again to "acurately perceive how good". The printed word looks nothing like this spoken action word, so trust your ears.

Printed "them", the speaker says "anything"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "and if anything they were". The spoken word is much longer than the printed one, listen for that length.

Printed "felicitous", the speaker says "evidence"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "there's some evidence that". The printed word is not the same idea, so follow the audio not the print.

"Psychological" matches the audio

Explanation: "the journal Psychological Science" has a formal name. It looks like a trick, but the speaker says it exactly as printed. Do not click it.

"Stanford" matches the audio

Explanation: "a psychology doctoral student at Stanford University" shows a place name. It may seem unusual, but the speaker says it exactly. Do not click it.
