That of course, is the sound of the Himalayan forest thrush. And that sound was a clue to field researchers that they might have a new species of bird on their hands. Even though it was in the bush. You know what I mean. You see, the Himalayan forest thrush looks a great deal like another well-known bird called the alpine thrush. They’re both found in north eastern India and nearby parts of China. But the alpine thrush has a raspy song compared with the more mellifluous Himalayan forest thrush. One of the researchers, Shashank Dalvi of India’s National Centre for Biological sciences and the Wildlife Conservation Society, likened the two different birds to Rod Stewart versus Adele. Further analyses, including of the birds’ DNA, confirmed that the song differences were indicative of these birds indeed belonging to two separate species.

Printed "veggieburgers", the speaker says "researchers"

Explanation: The speaker says "clue to field researchers", not "veggieburgers". Both words end with the same letters, so listen to the start of the word.

Printed "paean", the speaker says "north eastern"

Explanation: Listen for "north eastern India". The printed word "paean" makes no sense here.

Printed "sketched", the speaker says "compared"

Explanation: You will hear "raspy song compared with". The printed word "sketched" is on the page, so listen for a different first letter.

Printed "classwork", the speaker says "Shashank"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "researchers, Shashank Dalvi". You see "classwork" on the page, so listen to the whole name.

Printed "righteousness", the speaker says "sciences"

Explanation: Listen again to "Biological sciences and the Wildlife". 'righteousness' is much longer than 'sciences', so trust the audio.

"Himalayan" matches the audio

Explanation: "the Himalayan forest thrush" has a long place name that may look odd. The speaker says it exactly, so do not click it.

"Adele" matches the audio

Explanation: "Rod Stewart versus Adele" names a famous singer that might confuse you. The speaker says Adele exactly, so do not click it.
