Imagine a world where sunlight can be captured to produce electricity anywhere, on any surface. The makers of thin-film flexible solar cells imagine that world too. But a big problem has been the amount of silicon needed to harvest a little sunshine. Now, researchers at Caltech say they've designed a device that gets comparable solar absorption while using just one percent of the silicon per unit area that current solar cells need. The work was published in the journal Nature Materials. The research team tried silicon wire arrays instead of traditional silicon panels. These wires have been shown to do a good job converting sunlight to usable energy on the nanoscale. But the scientists had to create wires a thousand times longer. Light bounces around within the wires and is eventually absorbed when it hits at the correct angle.

Printed "bendable", the speaker says "flexible"

Explanation: You will hear "thin-film flexible solar cells". Both words do not start with the same letter, so listen to the first sound.

Printed "commotion", the speaker says "absorption"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "solar absorption while using". The printed and spoken words end the same way, so listen to the whole word for the start.

Printed "coupling", the speaker says "converting"

Explanation: Listen again to "do a good job converting sunlight". The first letter is the same, so wait for the whole word to hear the change.

Printed "hybridise", the speaker says "scientists"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "But the scientists had to". The printed word makes no sense in that spot, so follow the sound, not the page.

Printed "scrolled", the speaker says "absorbed"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "and is eventually absorbed when". The printed and spoken words end the same way, so listen to the start to tell them apart.

"Caltech" matches the audio

Explanation: "researchers at Caltech say they've" may look like a trick because it is a name. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"panels" matches the audio

Explanation: "traditional silicon panels." is a common phrase and might seem odd, but the speaker says it exactly. Do not click this word.
