Today, we tell about writer Zora Neale Hurston. She was one of the most recognized black women writers. She wrote seven books and more than one hundred short stories, plays, and articles for magazines. Zora Neale Hurston was born in eighteen ninety-one in Notasulga, Alabama. A short time later, her family moved to Eatonville, a small town in central Florida. All of the people of Eatonville were African-American. The town shaped Hurston's life and her writing. As a child, she would listen closely to the stories told by the adults in the town. Several of her books take place in communities very similar to Eatonville. The people she wrote about in her books are very similar to people she knew there.

Printed "five", the speaker says "seven"

Explanation: Listen again to "She wrote seven books". So "five" is on the page. Both words start with different letters, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "lived", the speaker says "moved"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "her family moved to Eatonville". The printed word "lived" is shown on the screen. Both words end with the same two letters, so watch the first sound carefully.

Printed "will", the speaker says "would"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "she would listen closely". On the page it says "will". The first letter is the same, so wait for the whole word to decide.

Printed "community", the speaker says "communities"

Explanation: The speaker says "take place in communities very similar". The printed word "community" appears in the text. Both words start the same, but the spoken word is longer, so listen for the extra ending.

Printed "is", the speaker says "are"

Explanation: Listen for "people she wrote about in her books are". You see "is" written there. The two words start with different letters, so follow the sound, not the meaning on the page.

"Eatonville" matches the audio

Explanation: "moved to Eatonville, a small town" has a place name you might not know. It looks odd, but the speaker says Eatonville exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"Notasulga" matches the audio

Explanation: "born in eighteen ninety-one in Notasulga, Alabama" contains a rare town name. It may seem wrong, but the audio matches the printed word, so do not click it.
