Business leaders generally try to do the right thing but all too often the right thing back fires if those leaders adopt values without understanding and managing the side effects that arise. The values can easily get in the way of what's actually intended. Okay so the first value I'm going to discuss is collaboration. Let me give you an example. On a management training course I once attended, We were put into groups and had to construct a bridge across a stream using building blocks that we were given. The rule was that everyone in the team had to move at least one building block during the construction. This was intended to encourage teamwork. But it was really a job best done by one person. The other teams tried to collaborate on building the structure and descended into confusion with everyone getting in each other's way.

Printed "underrating", the speaker says "understanding"

Explanation: The speaker says "without understanding and managing", not "underrating". Both words start with the same letter, so listen to the whole word to be sure.

Printed "learning", the speaker says "management"

Explanation: Listen for "On a management training course". The printed and spoken words start with different letters, so hear the first sound to tell them apart.

Printed "rocks", the speaker says "blocks"

Explanation: You will hear "building blocks that we", not "rocks". The two words end the same, but they start differently, so listen to the start.

Printed "granted", the speaker says "intended"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "This was intended to encourage", not "granted". The printed and spoken words end the same, so follow the meaning and the whole word.

Printed "commemorate", the speaker says "collaborate"

Explanation: Listen again to "tried to collaborate on", not "commemorate". They begin with the same letter. They also end the same, so trust the sound.

Printed "melting", the speaker says "getting"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "everyone getting in each", not "melting". The words end the same, but they start with different letters, so listen to the first sound.

"values" matches the audio

Explanation: "The values can easily get in the" may look odd near changes, so it can catch you. The speaker actually says it as printed, so do not click it.

"team" matches the audio

Explanation: "everyone in the team had to move" sits next to a changed word and looks tricky. It is exactly what the speaker says, so do not click it.
