The US is in the midst of an obesity epidemic. Americans just keep getting fatter and fatter. But the bad news doesn’t end there. Because in today’s issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists from Harvard and the University of California in San Diego report that obesity is actually contagious. And it seems you catch it from your friends. After analyzing 32 years worth of data from more than 12,000 individuals, the researchers found that thin people tend to cluster with thin people…and not just for warmth. And that people with more mass tend to gravitate toward one another, too. But it’s not that folks seek friends with a similar physique. Or that people who pack on the pounds all frequent the same fast-food franchises or avoid the same gyms. What the scientists think is happening is that as those around you start plumping out, you come to think that being a bit hefty isn’t such a bad thing. Then as you become larger, so do your friends. And your friends’ friends. And their friends as well. The good news is that losing weight should also make your friends lighter.

Printed "colder", the speaker says "fatter"

Explanation: Listen again to "getting fatter and fatter". The printed word "colder" starts with a different letter, so listen from the first sound.

Printed "infectious", the speaker says "contagious"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "is actually contagious". Both words end with the same two letters, so listen to the whole word to catch the difference.

Printed "trust", the speaker says "cluster"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "tend to cluster with". The printed word starts with a different letter and makes no sense here.

Printed "regulate", the speaker says "gravitate"

Explanation: The speaker says "tend to gravitate toward", not "regulate". The words end the same way, so listen from the start to hear which it is.

Printed "intelligence", the speaker says "physique"

Explanation: Listen for "a similar physique". The printed word "intelligence" starts with a different letter, so follow the sound, not the page.

Printed "exercising", the speaker says "plumping"

Explanation: You will hear "start plumping out". Both words end with the same two letters, so wait for the full word before you decide.

Printed "rate", the speaker says "weight"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "losing weight should also". The printed word "rate" starts with a different letter, so listen to the first sound.

"Harvard" matches the audio

Explanation: "scientists from Harvard and" may look like a trick. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"San" matches the audio

Explanation: "in San Diego" has a place name that may seem odd. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.
