Scientists are now starting to understand how not only the quantity but also the quality of sleep impacts our health and well-being. My research focuses on what many scientists believe is the most regenerative stage of sleep: deep sleep. We now know that generally speaking, there are three stages of sleep: light sleep, rapid eye movement or REM and deep sleep. We measure these stages by connecting electrodes to the scalp, chin and chest. In light sleep and REM, our brain waves are very similar to our brain waves in waking life. But our brain waves in deep sleep have these long-burst brain waves that are very different from our waking life brain waves. These long-burst brain waves are called delta waves. When we don't get the deep sleep we need, it inhibits our ability to learn and for our cells and bodies to recover. Deep sleep is how we convert all those interactions that we make during the day.

Printed "depends", the speaker says "focuses"

Explanation: Listen for "My research focuses on". The printed word and the spoken word start with different letters, so listen to the first sound.

Printed "steps", the speaker says "stages"

Explanation: You will hear "three stages of sleep". The first letter is the same, so wait for the whole word to tell them apart.

Printed "stipulated", the speaker says "similar"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "very similar to". They share the first letter, so pay attention to the ending.

Printed "getting", the speaker says "waking"

Explanation: Listen again to "our waking life". They start with different letters, and they end the same, so listen to the start.

Printed "conserve", the speaker says "convert"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "we convert all those". They begin the same, so wait for the full word before you decide.

"electrodes" matches the audio

Explanation: "connecting electrodes to the scalp" has a technical word you may not know. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"delta" matches the audio

Explanation: "These long-burst brain waves are called delta waves" uses a short science name. It may look odd, but the speaker says it exactly, so do not click it.
