In the eighteen fifties, women in the United States began to try to gain the same rights as men. One woman was a leader in the campaign to gain women the right to vote. I'm Stan Busby. And I'm Shirley Griffith. Today we tell about a fighter for rights for women, Susan B. Anthony. In seventeen seventy-six, a new nation declared its freedom from Britain. The Declaration of Independence was the document written to express the reasons for seeking that freedom. It stated that all men were created equal. It said that all men had the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Not every citizen of the new United States of America had one important right, however. That was the right to vote. At first, the only people permitted to vote in the United States were white men who owned property and could read. By eighteen sixty, most white male citizens over the age of twenty-one had the right to vote.

Printed "begin", the speaker says "began"

Explanation: Listen again to "women in the United States began". The first letter is the same, so wait for the whole word.

Printed "on", the speaker says "to"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "right to vote". The words start with different letters, so listen for the short connecting word.

Printed "for", the speaker says "from"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "freedom from Britain". Both words start with f, so hear the end to tell them apart.

Printed "tell", the speaker says "express"

Explanation: The speaker says "to express the reasons". The spoken word is much longer, so expect a longer word there.

Printed "was", the speaker says "were"

Explanation: Listen for "all men were created". First letters match, so listen for the whole small word.

Printed "has", the speaker says "had"

Explanation: You will hear "United States of America had". Both words start the same, so focus on the whole short word.

Printed "got", the speaker says "permitted"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "people permitted to vote". The spoken word is much longer, so you will hear more of it.

Printed "that", the speaker says "the"

Explanation: Listen again to "was the right to". Words start with the same letter, so listen for the shorter one.

"Susan" matches the audio

Explanation: "a fighter for rights for women, Susan B. Anthony." That is a name, so it may look tricky. The speaker says the name exactly as printed. Do not click it.

"United" matches the audio

Explanation: "the new United States of America" looks like a long phrase, but it matches the audio exactly. Do not click it.
