The flies’ aversion is well-founded - if they even a light on the fetid fruit, they die. But one species of fruit fly, Drosphila sechellia, loves the pukey plant. It even lays its eggs there. In a study just published in Public Library of Science Biology, researchers looked at the genetic differences between Sechellia and close relatives that shun the Noni. They found a very different pattern of expression of two genes responsible for olfaction that made the Sechellia fruit flies no longer notice the bad smell. More research will unravel the rest of the story - but it seems a good bet that once the Sechellia stopped minding the funk, they quickly developed a resistance to the acidic environment that kills other species of Drosophila. And mutations that made a few flies tolerate a smelly plant may have been the first steps toward a new species.

Printed "established", the speaker says "published"

Explanation: The speaker says "In a study just published", not "established". Those words begin with different letters, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "shot", the speaker says "shun"

Explanation: Listen for "that shun the". Both words start with the same letter, so wait for the whole word.

Printed "shorter", the speaker says "longer"

Explanation: You will hear "no longer notice". The first letters differ, yet both end the same way.

Printed "fastly", the speaker says "quickly"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "they quickly developed". The speaker uses a different first letter, so listen to the full word.

Printed "second", the speaker says "first"

Explanation: Listen again to "the first steps". The two words mean different things, so trust the audio, not the printed word.

"pukey" matches the audio

Explanation: "loves the pukey plant" has a casual sounding word that may look odd. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"Noni" matches the audio
