I'm Alice Brennan, this is Background Briefing. And before we start this week's story I want you to know that we're going to some pretty grim places, including discussions of suicide and murder. If it raises any issues for you, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, and if you need to speak to someone about domestic or family violence, call 1800 RESPECT, that's 1800 737 732. Almost every three months, for the last 15 years, a person with disabilities in Australia has been killed by their carer. That's not a number that's easy to come by here at Background Briefing we've discovered this by poring over court records and media coverage and doing the maths ourselves. A carer is a family member or a friend, with responsibilities for someone else's care. One person with disabilities killed almost every three months is high, but because in some cases disability may not be reported publicly, the true figure is almost certainly much higher.

Printed "excluding", the speaker says "including"

Explanation: You will hear "including discussions of suicide". The printed word starts with a different letter, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "connect", the speaker says "contact"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "contact Lifeline on 13". Both words start with the same first letter, so wait for the full word.

Printed "mystery", the speaker says "violence"

Explanation: Listen again to "about domestic or family violence". The printed word begins with a different letter and ends differently, so follow the sound not the print.

Printed "caretaker", the speaker says "carer"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "killed by their carer". The printed word is much longer, so listen for the shorter word.

Printed "under", the speaker says "over"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "poring over court records". The words start with different letters, so listen to the first sound.

Printed "anyone", the speaker says "someone"

Explanation: The speaker says "responsibilities for someone else's care". The printed and spoken words start with different letters, so hear the whole word.

Printed "low", the speaker says "high"

Explanation: Listen for "is high, but because". The printed and spoken words start with different letters, so trust the audio.

Printed "highest", the speaker says "higher"

Explanation: You will hear "much higher". Both words start the same, so wait for how the word ends.

"Lifeline" matches the audio

Explanation: "contact Lifeline on 13 11 14" looks like a special name and may trick you. The speaker actually says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"RESPECT" matches the audio

Explanation: "call 1800 RESPECT, that's 1800 737 732" has an all caps word that catches the eye. It matches the audio exactly, so do not click it.
