Pet food is a big business, worth over 25 million dollars annually in the United States alone. Owners choose what to feed their pets based on marketing, personal views and their pets' preferences. Current trends show that owners like to provide their pets with the same kind of foods they themselves might consume—high-quality meat and organic produce—but this is not necessary for pets' health nor is it environmentally sustainable. Dog and cat foods, for example, typically contain 30 to 60 per cent protein, much of it derived from animal sources, which require a lot of land, water and food to raise. Since meat is already being produced for human consumption, the best thing to feed pets is the by-product of this process. Many parts of animals that humans tend not to eat are good-quality and appealing sources of nutrition for pets.

Printed "advertising", the speaker says "marketing"

Explanation: The speaker says "based on marketing, personal", not "advertising". They begin with different letters, so wait for the whole word before you click.

Printed "required", the speaker says "necessary"

Explanation: Listen for "not necessary for pets'". The two words start with different letters, so wait for the whole word before you click.

Printed "coming", the speaker says "derived"

Explanation: You will hear "much of it derived from". They start with different letters, so listen to the start of the word.

Printed "practice", the speaker says "process"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "of this process". Both words start with p, so listen for the rest of the word to tell them apart.

Printed "appetizing", the speaker says "appealing"

Explanation: Listen again to "good-quality and appealing". Both words start with a and end the same, so trust the audio, not the spelling.

"States" matches the audio

Explanation: "in the United States" looks like a long name and may catch your eye. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"protein" matches the audio

Explanation: "60 per cent protein" has a technical word that seems strange but it is spoken exactly as printed. Do not click it.
