Today we are going to examine one of the techniques that engineers in Japan have designed to protect buildings in the event of an earthquake. It's called base isolation and it involves temporarily separating the upper part of the structure from its foundations. The system works by levitating the building on a cushion of air. Sensors detect seismic movements in the ground and activate an air compressor. This pumps air in between the structure and the foundations, lifting the building three centimetres above the ground. When the earthquake subsides, the compressor is turned off and the building returns to its original position.

Printed "explore", the speaker says "examine"

Explanation: The speaker says "going to examine one", not "explore". Both words start with the same letter, so listen to the end of the word.

Printed "devised", the speaker says "designed"

Explanation: Listen for "have designed to protect". They start and end with the same letters, but the spoken word is longer.

Printed "detaching", the speaker says "separating"

Explanation: You will hear "temporarily separating the". They start with different letters, but both end with the same letters.

Printed "functions", the speaker says "works"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "The system works by". The spoken word is much shorter than the printed one.

Printed "raising", the speaker says "lifting"

Explanation: Listen again to "lifting the building three". They start with different letters, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "switched", the speaker says "turned"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "the compressor is turned off". They end with the same letters, and the printed word is longer.

"Japan" matches the audio

Explanation: "engineers in Japan have" may look like a trick. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"compressor" matches the audio

Explanation: "activate an air compressor" has a technical word that looks odd. It is spoken exactly as written, so do not click it.
