One of the concern about working with genetically modified crops has been that vegetation growing in agricultural fields might escape out into the world. Now, for the first time in the U.S., researchers report a large population of GM crops beyond the farm. Transgenic canola plants in North Dakota had recieved genes making them resistant to herbicides, such as the weed killer Roundup. Researchers collected and tested 406 canola plants along thousands of miles of state roads. They found 347 carrying at least one resistance gene. There were also indications that the inserted genes were being passed on to new generations, producing some plants in the wild with multiple transgenes. The findings were presented on August 6th at the annual meeting of the ecological Society of America in Pittsburgh. The transgenic canola plants are not about to take over the world. But researchers are obviously curious about how these particular plants managed to make it in places like the edges of parking lots rather than pampered fields. Any answers they find will likely affect future biotechnology regulation.

Printed "girth", the speaker says "concern"

Explanation: Listen for "One of the concern". You see "girth" on the page, not the audio word. The first letters are different, so listen to the start of the word.

Printed "beside", the speaker says "modified"

Explanation: You will hear "genetically modified crops". That printed word shows "beside" on the page. The words begin with different letters, so wait for the full word.

Printed "pedigreed", the speaker says "recieved"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "had recieved genes". It shows "pedigreed" in the transcript. Both end with the same two letters, so listen to the whole word to hear the difference.

Printed "archeological", the speaker says "ecological"

Explanation: Listen again to "the ecological Society of". The transcript shows "archeological" instead. The ending letters match, so focus on the start of the word to be sure.

Printed "pinprick", the speaker says "transgenic"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "the transgenic canola plants". The page shows "pinprick" instead. That printed word does not make sense here, so trust the audio.

Printed "industriously", the speaker says "obviously"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "but researchers are obviously curious". What is printed is "industriously" on the page. The endings match, so listen for the different beginnings.

"Roundup" matches the audio

Explanation: "the weed killer Roundup" has a brand name that catches the eye. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"canola" matches the audio

Explanation: "Transgenic canola plants" contains a crop name that might look odd. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.
