Imagine climbing diamond mountains, or hiking around the graphite shores of a lake of tar. Sound a little sci-fi? Well a new discovery suggests planets like that might be out there—planets littered with carbon minerals, instead of the oxygen-rich silicates, like quartz, that cover the Earth. Because astronomers have found the first carbon-rich exoplanet, with more carbon than oxygen in its atmosphere—instead of the 1 to 2 carbon to oxygen ratio found in our solar system. The exoplanet, called WASP 12 b, is a gas giant, like Jupiter. By taking the spectrum of heat radiating from the planet, the researchers found that the planet's atmosphere was loaded with carbon, in the form of carbon monoxide and methane. The study appears in the journal Nature. The finding suggests one commonly accepted model of planetary formation, where icy chunks glom into a core, wouldn't work here. Instead the core may have formed from carbon-rich fragments, like tar. But more than that, this unusual planet is more proof of the diversity of the universe—and it makes those dreams of diamond planets a tiny bit more plausible.

Printed "seismologic", the speaker says "carbon rich"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "carbon rich exoplanet". The printed and spoken words start with different letters, and the spoken phrase is much shorter.

Printed "siestas", the speaker says "researchers"

Explanation: Listen again to "the researchers found". They begin with different letters, and the spoken word is much longer.

Printed "gazelle", the speaker says "atmosphere"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "planet's atmosphere was". Listen for different first letters, and note the word ends differently.

Printed "leaded", the speaker says "accepted"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "commonly accepted model". The words end with the same two letters, so listen to the whole word to tell them apart.

Printed "academy", the speaker says "diversity"

Explanation: The speaker says "diversity of the universe", not "academy". The printed word does not make sense in the sentence, and the first letters differ.

"graphite" matches the audio

Explanation: "graphite shores of a lake of tar" may look odd and draw your eye. The speaker actually says graphite exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"WASP" matches the audio

Explanation: "WASP 12 b, is a gas giant" has a strange name in the page and may seem wrong. The speaker says WASP exactly as printed, so do not click it.
