There are now at least five major garbage patches in the world's oceans, and much of that trash is plastic. But last month researchers said they can only account for one percent of the plastic they'd expect to find in the oceans. So, where'd the rest of it go? Well, animals eat some of it. Plastic has been found in turtles, seabirds, fish, plankton, shellfish, even bottomfeeding invertebrates. But there's another way sea creatures might be accumulating plastic: by sucking up tiny plastic particles with their siphons and gills, researchers added common shore crabs—Carcinus maenas—to tanks of seawater containing millions of tiny plastic particles, just 10 microns in diameter. After 16 hours, all the crabs had plastic lodged in their gills. And the particles stuck around for up to three weeks, too. The results are in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

Printed "receivables", the speaker says "researchers"

Explanation: The speaker says "last month researchers said", not "receivables". Both words start with the same letter, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "immunising", the speaker says "bottomfeeding"

Explanation: Listen for "bottomfeeding invertebrates", not "immunising". The printed word starts with a different letter, so hear the first sound.

Printed "photometers", the speaker says "particles"

Explanation: You will hear "tiny plastic particles with", not "photometers". Both words start with p, so wait for the end of the word to tell them apart.

Printed "pieceworkers", the speaker says "researchers"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "researchers added common shore", not "pieceworkers". They start with different letters, so listen from the first sound.

"seabirds" matches the audio

Explanation: "Plastic has been found in turtles, seabirds, fish". It sits near changed words. The speaker says it exactly, so do not click it.

"Carcinus" matches the audio

Explanation: "Carcinus maenas". The Latin name looks odd, but the speaker says it exactly, so do not click it.
